InB Minister M Venkaiah Naidu says that new film Institute will be set up in Itanagar
Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu announced that a Film Institute will be set up in Itanagar. Talking to newspersons in Guwahati yesterday, Mr Naidu said that the institute will start functioning from a temporary campus with an introduction of 10 week short term course from 15th of May this year. He said that an investment of 200 crore rupees is proposed to be made for the institute, which will benefit the students of North East region. Mr.Naidu hoped that desirous students of the region would benefit from the institute which is being setup under the aegis of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata.

SC seeks Centre’s response on plea seeking framing of policy for promoting national anthem, national song
The Supreme Court today sought response from the Centre in four weeks on a plea seeking framing of a policy for promoting the national anthem and the national song. A bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra issued notice and asked the Centre to file its reply on the plea which also sought to ascertain the feasibility of singing the national anthem and the national song in Parliament, assemblies, courts, schools and colleges on working days. The petition filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay sought directions for taking steps to promote brotherhood and national integrity in the country.
Palladium Cinema site to be developed as heritage museum in Srinagar
The Palladium Cinema site at Lal Chowk of Srinagar will be developed as a heritage museum soon. The cinema was once a popular hangout for movie buffs but fell victim to militancy. Palladium Cinema, which is located at the historic Lal Chowk, was closed down in 1989 after the eruption of militancy in the state. Later in 1990, the cinema was gutted in a fire and it has also seen two fidayeen attacks. At present, the cinema is occupied by security forces.

Indian Navy dedicates its Largest Missile destroyer to Chennai
INS Chennai, a ‘P15A Guided Missile Destroyer’, was dedicated to the city of Chennai in the presence of Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami. The dedication ceremony included a series of events and drills. Also present at the event was Vice-Admiral HCS Bisht, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Indian Navy’s Eastern Naval Command. The indigenously designed guided missile destroyer was commissioned into the Indian navy’s combat fleet on 21 November 2016 by the then Defence minister Manohar Parrikar in Mumbai. It is commanded by Captain C. R. Praveen Nair and has 45 officers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches projects related to SAUNI Yojana at Botad
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17 April 2017 dedicated Phase 1 (Link 2) of the Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation (SAUNI) Yojana to the nation. PM Modi also laid the Foundation Stone of Phase 2 (Link 2) of the SAUNI Yojana. The design of Phase 2 is to pump Narmada water in 17 dams spread across Botad, Bhavnagar and Amreli districts of Gujarat. This is considered as a second milestone of the Rs 12000 crore projects to pump Narmada water to the arid Saurashtra region. SAUNI Yojana’s Link 1 canal will take water to 30 dams in Jamnagar and Devbhoomi Dwarka districts. In August 2016, PM Modi had dedicated Phase-I of the Link-I canal to the nation. The Saurashtra-Narmada Avataran Irrigation Yojana has been launched to divert one one million acre feet (MAFT) excess over flowing flood water of Narmada allocated to Saurashtra Region.

Cabinet clears EC's proposal to buy paper trail EVMs
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the Election Commission's proposal to procure new Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) equipped EVMs. The EC reportedly requires ₹3,174 crore to buy 16 lakh VVPAT machines to conduct the 2019 polls. The Centre had earlier sanctioned two tranches of ₹1,009 crore and ₹9,200 crore for the poll panel to procure new EVMs.

West Bengal: Govt introduces Social Security Yojana, converges 5 beneficiary schemes
West Bengal Government has introduced the Social Security Yojana by converging five separate beneficiary schemes for workers in the unorganised sectors and for self-employed people. Around 5 crore people will benefit from the Yojana, with around 1 crore getting direct benefits. People will derive more benefits from this new scheme, as compared to the five earlier schemes. The State Finance Minister, Dr Amit Mitra, said that the decision in this regard was taken during a Cabinet meeting on Monday headed by Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee. State Assistance Scheme for Provident Fund for Unorganised Sector, West Bengal Unorganised Sector Workers’ Health Security Scheme, Social Security scheme for Construction Workers, West Bengal Transport Workers Social Security Scheme and West Bengal Bidi Workers Welfare Scheme are being converged.

Yogi Adityanath govt renames Agra, Gorakhpur airports
The Yogi Adityanath-led government on Tuesday renamed the Agra and Gorakhpur airports in the Cabinet meet. While Gorakhpur airport is renamed as Mahayogi Gorakhnath Airport after the founder of the Nath monastic movement, Agra airport is named after RSS ideologue Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay. Furthermore, the Department of Disabled Welfare will now be called Divyang Jan Vikas Empowerment.

Haryana govt to provide accidental insurance cover
Haryana Government has decided to provide accidental insurance cover to all residents of the State in the age group of 18 to 70 years under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana’ (PMSBY. The premium would be reimbursed by the state government. A decision to this effect was taken at the Cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister Manohar Lal in Chandigarh yesterday. The sum insured would be two lakh rupees each in case of accidental death, and, in case of total and irrecoverable loss. The scheme would be with one year cover, renewable from year to year and would be offered through banks and administered through public sector general insurance companies and other general insurance companies.

Punjab government to set up 'book banks' in schools
The Punjab government has decided to set up 'book banks' in schools to provide old books to needy students free of charge and also to prevent wastage of paper. Punjab Education Minister Aruna Chaudhary said, "The students would be asked to submit their old books... 'Book bank' is purely a voluntary initiative and is not binding on any student."

US President Donald Trump signs executive order to tighten H-1B visa programme
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to tighten the rules for technology companies seeking to bring highly skilled foreign workers to the United States. The order signed by Mr Trump targets the H-1B visa programme. The White House said the programme undercuts American workers by bringing in large numbers of cheaper foreign workers, which drives down US wages. The order directs US agencies to propose rules to prevent immigration fraud and abuse in the programme. Agencies have also been asked to suggest changes so that the H-1B visas are granted to the most-skilled or highest-paid applicants.

US 'Not Looking for Fight' With North Korea: Nikki Haley
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said Washington is not looking to get into a fight with North Korea unless Pyongyang sparks one. She told reporters yesterday that North Korea needs to realize that it should not give a reason to the United States for a fight and US also not wants a reason to fight with North Korea. Earlier, US Vice President Mike Pence said during a joint press conference with Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso that the United States will continue to work with its allies to address the gravest threat to the region emanating from North Korea.

At UN, US warns on human rights in Iran, Cuba, N.Korea
United States has singled out North Korea and Syria over human rights violations. She also warned at the United Nations that new conflicts could be triggered by rights abuses in Iran, Cuba and North Korea. US Ambassador Nikki Haley made the case at the Security Council yesterday that more attention should be focused on rights abuses to prevent conflict, a view challenged by Russia, China and other countries at the UN body. Turning to Syria, she recalled that the war, now in its seventh year, began with anti-government protests, and took a swipe at the Council for being reluctant to address the crisis early on. Ms Haley also mentioned cases of torture in Burundi and Myanmar's crackdown on ethnic Rohingyas as human rights concerns.
UN to issue special stamps commemorating International Yoga Day on 21 June
United Nations will issue special stamps commemorating the International Yoga Day on June 21 this year. India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin tweeted that the commemorative stamps will be released soon. The UN postal agency, UN Postal Administration will issue the new special event sheet to commemorate Yoga Day that has been marked annually since 2015. The special sheet consists of stamps with images of the sacred Indian sound "Om" and various yogic postures.

Mark Zuckerberg Co-founded social media giant Facebook currently owns the four most downloaded non-gaming apps in the world, namely WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. The World Bank on 16 April 2017 released a report entitled Globaliztion Backlash. The report observed that despite possible protectionism, South Asia has an opportunity to increase exports and create jobs. Rajasthan: State govt, HPCL sign agreement for ?43,129 cr Barmer refinery
In Rajasthan, the state government and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) today signed an agreement for the Rs 43,129 crore Barmer refinery in the presence of Union Minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan and Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in a ceremony held in Jaipur. On the occasion Mr. Pradhan said that the refinery would be completed within next four years and for that period around Rs 70 thousand crore will be invested in the refinery. He also charged the previous Congress government in the state that it had launched the refinery project earlier without calculating financial management of the government and just launched before assembly election for political gain.

SBI surpasses ONGC to become India’s most valuable PSU firm
State-run lender State Bank of India (SBI) on Tuesday surpassed energy firm ONGC to become the country’s most valuable public sector unit (PSU), in terms of market valuation. The market cap of SBI stood at ₹2.35 lakh crore, against ONGC’s ₹2.32 lakh crore. Among the top 10 most valued Indian companies, SBI is at the fifth position.

TAL Manufacturing Solutions in April 2017 unveiled India’s first conceptualized, designed and manufactured articulated industrial robot called BRABO.BRABO stands for “Bravo Robot”. It has been developed indigenously for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) in India.TAL Manufacturing Solutions is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors.The robot was designed and manufactured at the TAL’s Pune factory.
Malaysia Airlines world's 1st to satellite-track its flights
Malaysia Airlines has become the world's first airline which will track its fights with the help of satellites by 2018. This will enable the airline to track its flights minute-by-minute, anywhere in the world including over the polar regions and the most remote oceans. No new avionics or modifications are needed for aircraft to be tracked by the satellites.

BCCI rejects S Sreesanth's plea for review of his life ban
Tainted pacer S Sreesanth's plea for a review of his life ban has been summarily rejected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.(BCCI). The national cricket governing body says it will not compromise on its zero tolerance policy towards corruption. The BCCI informed Sreesanth of its decision in a letter which Sreesanth received on Sunday. The letter was sent by BCCI CEO Rahul Johri after the cricketer wrote to the Committee Of Administrators (COA) appealing for revocation of his ban in the 2013 spot-fixing scandal. BCCI also told Kerala High Court that a criminal court exonerating Sreesanth of spot fixing charges was not enough to lift the life time ban on him.

ICC names Ganguly, Ponting as commentators for upcoming Champions Trophy
Acclaimed international captains including India's Sourav Ganguly and Australia's Ricky Ponting are a part of a stellar line-up of commentators named by the ICC for the upcoming Champions Trophy scheduled from June 1 this year. Some of the other former captains in the line-up include Brendon McCullum of New Zealand, Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka and Graeme Smith of South Africa. The eight-team tournament kicks off with host England playing Bangladesh at The Oval on June 1.The final will also be played at The Oval on June 18. The tournament will have state-of-the-art coverage. It will include 34 cameras at every game, including eight ultra-motion Hawk-Eye cameras, front and reverse view stump cameras and a Spidercam.
