- Today (17th May) is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD 2020).

- This day was proclaimed to be on 17 May by United Nations General Assembly resolution, following the 2005 World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis.
- Theme of WTISD 2020 : "Connect 2030: ICTs for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)"
- India has provided 30,000 Pathodetect COVID-19 Qualitative RT PCR Test Kits to Nepal.

- Ambassador of India to Nepal, Vinay Mohan Kwatra handed over test kits to Nepal’s Health and Population Minister, Bhanubhakta Dhakal in Kathmandu today.
- The consignment, as a gift from the people of India to people of Nepal, will enable Nepali Health Professionals to conduct PCR test on 30,000 people.
- The ongoing countrywide Lockdown has been extended till May 31, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced today.

- The NDMA said lockdown measures need to be implemented for a further period of 14 days in the country to contain the spread of COVID-19.
- As many as 4,987 coronavirus cases were confirmed in India in the last 24 hours, marking the biggest one-day jump so far and taking the total number of cases to 90,927.
- Meanwhile, 120 deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 2,872.
- Out of the total cases, 53,946 cases are active.
- The central government has directed states and Union Territories to ensure distribution of free food grains to eight crore migrant labourers and their families amid coronavirus lockdown, within a period of 15 days.

- Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan asked state governments to give food grains and pulses to migrant labourers who don't have ration cards.
- The Govt today announced that PM eVIDYA programme for multi-mode access to digital/online education will be launched immediately.

- As part of the programme, there will be one earmarked TV channel per class from 1 to 12.
- There will also be special content for visually and hearing impaired.
- The government is taking proactive steps to help children who don't have internet access.

- Swayam Prabha DTH channels have been launched to support and reach those who don't have internet access and 12 school education-related channels will be added to it.
- The Cyclonic storm "AMPHAN" over Southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood moved slowly northwestwards with a speed of 03 kmph during past 06 hours, intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and lay centred over the same region at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 17th May, 2020.

- As per IMD, Amaravati, AP, AMPHAN is situated about 990 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 1,140 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 1,260 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).
- It is very likely to intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 06 hours.
- The value of debit and credit card transactions fell by 71% in March to ₹1.15 lakh crore from the year-ago period, according to a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report.

- The number of card swipes fell by over 20% to 53.5 crore from 66.5 crore registered in January.
- Meanwhile, UPI transactions fell by 6% to 125 crore in March from 133 crore in February.
- While unveiling fifth tranche of measures to make India self-reliant, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the following :

- The Centre has decided to increase borrowing limits of states from 3% to 5% of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) for 2020-21 only.

- States have so far borrowed only 14% of the limit authorised to them, while the 86% remains unutilised.
- This will give states extra resources of ₹4.28 lakh crore.
- The budget estimate for MGNREGA was ₹61,000 crore. The government will now allocate an additional ₹40,000 crore.
- 85% cost of Shramik Special trains was borne by the Centre.
- One-time transfer of ₹2,000 has reached 8.19 crore farmers.
- Government will decriminalise Companies Act violations involving minor technical and procedural defaults.
- The World Health Organization (WHO) today announced that streets and sidewalks are not considered as routes of infection for coronavirus.

- "Spraying or fumigation of outdoor spaces (such as streets, sidewalks, walkways or marketplaces), is not recommended to remove or inactivate SARS-CoV-2 or other pathogens," it added.
- Even in indoor spaces, routine application of disinfectants to environmental surfaces is not recommended, said WHO.
- American filmmaker Lynn Shelton (54), who helmed a few episodes of 'New Girl', 'Fresh Off the Boat', 'Little Fires Everywhere' and 'Mad Men', passed away due to an unidentified blood disorder.
