Nomura's Food Vulnerability Index 2019: Key Facts
  • Food Vulnerability Index 2019 has been released by Japanese financial services group Nomura. Popularly known as Nomura's Food Vulnerability Index (NFVI), the index ranks countries on the basis of their vulnerability to changes in food prices. Nomura's Food Vulnerability Index 2019 has included 110 countries in this edition. Thus, the index has checked the vulnerability of swing in food prices in 110 countries across the world.
  • NFVI uses three components to derive or check the vulnerability of change in food prices in the countries-
    • Country’s GDP per person
    • The share of food in household consumption
    • Net food imports
  • A country with low GDP per person, a higher share of food in household consumption and high net food imports will be most vulnerable to change in food prices. A country having a higher rank in the index is more vulnerable.

Key Findings

  • According to Nomura's Food Vulnerability Index 2019, the top 50 countries are most vulnerable to changes in food prices in the upcoming time. These countries belong to Emerging Market Group.
  • These top 50 countries form almost 60% of the global population.
  • Libya is the most vulnerable country according to the index.
  • The top 5 most vulnerable countries to swing in food prices are Libya, Tajikistan, Montenegro, Syria and Algeria.

India Specific Findings

  • India has been ranked 44th among 110 countries in the Nomura's Food Vulnerability Index 2019.
  • India’s retail inflation touched a 16-month high to 4.6% in the month of October because of the jump in food prices.
  • Food inflation in the country grew by approximately 8% which is double the rate of overall retail inflation.
  • The items that contributed to this rise in inflation were pulses and vegetables and fish and meat. The inflation rate of pulses was 12%; inflation rate of vegetables was 26% and that of fish & meat was 10%.
