English Vocabulary from "The Hindu News Paper" - 5th  August 2019

Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Freeing Kulbhushan: On consular access"
  • Consular - related to a government official sent to live in another country and look after their own country’s citizens and business interests there
  • Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
  • Unanimous - a unanimous decision, vote, agreement etc is one that everyone agrees with and supports
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Convention - a formal agreement between governments of different countries about how they should behave towards each other or towards the people in their country
  • Proceedings- the actions taken, usually in court, to settle a legal matter
  • Unimpeded - not interrupted or delayed
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Three-fold - three times as much
  • Clear-cut - definite and easy to understand, recognize, or make a decision about
  • Augur - to be a sign of what may happen in the future
  • Trial - the process of examining a case in a court of law and deciding whether someone is guilty or innocent
  • Conviction - a decision by a court of law that someone is guilty of a crime
  • Sentence - a punishment given by a judge, usually involving a period of time that a person must spend in prison
  • Espionage - attempts to discover your enemy’s political, military, or industrial secrets using secret methods. Someone who does this is a spy
  • Monitor - to regularly check something or watch someone in order to find out what is happening
  • Purported - said by some people to be real or true, but not proved to be real or true
  • Confession - a spoken or written statement in which you admit that you have committed a crime
  • Adverse - negative, unpleasant, or harmful
  • Coercion - the use of force or threats to make someone do something
  • Overturn - to say officially that something such as a decision or law is wrong and change it
  • Hurdle - one of several problems that you must solve before you can do something successfully
  • Rhetoric - a style of speaking or writing that is intended to influence people
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Consistently - in the same way and without changing in behaviour, attitudes, or qualities
  • Firmly - definitely
  • Fury - a feeling of very strong anger that usually does not last very long
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Deploy - if a government or army deploys soldiers or weapons, it uses them
  • Cluster - a small group of people or things that are very close to each other
  • Munitions - military weapons and equipment such as guns, bullets, and bombs
  • Civilian - someone who does not belong to the armed forces or the police
  • Infiltration - to secretly join an organization or go into a place in order to find out information about it or damage it
  • Ratcheted up - to increase something in controlled stages over a period of time
  • Ham-handed - doing things in an awkward or unskilled way when using the hands or dealing with people
  • Valley - a low area of land between mountains or hills, usually with a river flowing through it
  • Tragedy - a very sad event that causes people to suffer or die
  • Overshadow - to be a negative feature or influence that spoils something
  • Interpreter - someone whose job is to translate what a speaker is saying in one language into another language so that someone else can understand it
  • Ought to - used when you realize that someone did not do the right thing in the past
  • Perennial - always existing, or never seeming to change
  • Perspective - a way of thinking about something
  • Amend - to make changes to a document, law, agreement etc, especially in order to improve it
  • Paucity - a small amount of something that is not enough
  • Moot - a moot point, question, or issue is one that people disagree about
  • Optimally - in the way that is most likely to bring success or advantage
  • Mundane - ordinary and not interesting or exciting, especially because of happening too regularly
  • Impinge - to have an effect on something, especially in a negative way
  • Interpretation - an explanation of the meaning or importance of something
  • For instance - for example
  • Disaster - something very bad that happens and causes a lot of damage or kills a lot of people
  • Litigant - someone who is involved in a disagreement that is being examined in a court of law
  • Ostensibly - used for saying that although someone pretends to have one reason for something, there is in fact another reason
  • Public interest - the fact that the public has a right to know about something because it affects them
  • Liquidate - to close a business and sell everything that it owns, usually in order to pay money that is owed
  • Burgeoning - growing or developing quickly
  • Docket - a document that gives information about what is inside something such as a parcel
  • Restraint - the limit or control of the expression of strong emotion or opinion
  • Oral - spoken but not written
  • Adherence - the action of continuing to obey a rule, law, agreement etc
  • Preserve - to take care of a place or building in order to prevent it from being harmed or destroyed
  • Apex - the top or highest part of something
  • Arbiter - a person or organization that has official power to settle disagreements
  • Statutory - controlled by a law or statute
  • Interpretation - an explanation of the meaning or importance of something
  • Detract - to make something seem less good, attractive, or important
  • Worthwhile - if something is worthwhile, it is worth the time, money, or effort that you spend on it
  • Appellate - relating to a legal appeal
  • Far-flung - far away from where you are or from towns and cities
  • Disposal - the process of getting rid of something
