What is Inclusive Internet Index?

Inclusive Internet Index is a comprehensive index released by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) commissioned by Facebook.

The index assessed a country's Internet inclusion across four categories

  1. Availability, 
  2. Affordability, 
  3. Relevance and 
  4. Readiness. 
  • Availability category measures the quality of available infrastructure that is required for access and levels of Internet usage. 
  • Affordability category measures the cost required for access of internet relative to income 
  • It also measures level of competition in the Internet marketplace. 
  • Relevance measures the presence and existence of local language content and relevant content. 
  • Readiness measures the capacity to access the Internet, including skills, cultural acceptance, and supporting policy. 

    Key Findings

    • There are demonstrable benefits from comprehensive female e-inclusion policies, digital skills programmes and targets for women and girls to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
    • Men have more internet access than women globally.
    • Digital divide appears to be widening at the bottom of income pyramid, risking a reversal of past progress.
    • In terms of gender equality: UK, Namibia, Ireland, Austria, Chile and South Africa are the top performers of the year.
    • Top ranked countries:
      1. Sweden (Score - 89.5/100)
      2. Singapore (87.3)
      3. United States (86.3)
      4. Denmark (85.9)
      5. United Kingdom (85.4)
    • Web accessibility standards have improved globally, led by low and lower middle income countries.
    • The digital divide appears to be widening at the bottom of the income pyramid, risking a reversal of past progress.

      Inclusive Internet Index & World:

      • This year's index covered 94 percent of the world's population and , 96% of Global GDP  and an expanded data set of 100 countries, up from 86 countries in 2018.

      India & Inclusive Internet Index:

      • Rank of India in Inclusive internet index is 47th out of 100 countries when it comes to inclusive Internet and connectivity for all.
