Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Hasina’s triumph: on Bangladesh election results"
- Triumph - a great victory or success
- Landslide -a situation in which a person or political party wins an election by a very big majority
- Immensely - extremely
- Formidable - very impressive in size, power, or skill and therefore deserving respect and often difficult to deal with
- Agenda - all the things that need to be done or that need to be thought about or solved
- Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
- Scale - the size of something
- Take someone by surprise - to happen unexpectedly
- Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
- Contest - to compete for a job or for success in a competition
- Boycott - to not take part in an event, or to not buy or use something as a protest
- Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
- Conflicting - describes two or more things that cannot all be right or cannot all happen at the same time
- Farcical - something that is farcical is so badly organized, unsuccessful, or unfair that it seems silly
- Allege - to say that something is true or that someone has done something wrong or illegal, even though this has not been proved
- Rigging - the act of organizing something in a dishonest way in order to produce a particular result
- Monitor - to regularly check something or watch someone in order to find out what is happening
- Preliminary - coming before the main or most important part of something
- Evaluation - careful thought about something before making a judgment about its value, importance, or quality
- Decline - to say politely that you will not accept something or do something
- Amid - if something happens amid particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
- Turnout - the number of voters in an election
- Daunting - something that is daunting makes you worried because you think that it will be very difficult or dangerous to do
- Heal - to make or become well again
- Rattle - to make someone feel nervous or angry
- Manipulate - to influence someone, or to control something, in a clever or dishonest way
- Crackdown - strong action that someone in authority takes to stop a particular activity
- Run-up - to make something very quickly
- Activist - someone who takes part in activities that are intended to achieve political or social change, especially someone who is a member of an organization
- Unleash - to do or to cause something that has a very powerful or harmful effect
- Grave - so serious that you feel worried
- Level playing field - a situation that is fair for all the people involved
- Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
- Reach out to somebody - to try to communicate with a person or a group of people, usually in order to help or involve them
- Mar - to spoil something
- Authoritarian - controlling everything and forcing people to obey strict rules and laws
- Mend your ways - to improve your behaviour after you have been behaving badly for a long time
- Inclusive - deliberately aiming to involve all types of people
- Strategic - carefully planned in order to achieve a particular goal, especially in war, business, or politics
- Outcome - the final result of a process, meeting, activity etc

- Liberal - accepting different opinions and ways of behaving and tending to be sympathetic to other people
- Scrapping - to decide not to continue with something such as a plan or an event
- Criteria - a standard that is used for judging something or for making a decision about something
- Strike a blow for something - to do something to help or to support an idea, movement, or group
- Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them
- Progressive - supporting social and political change that aims to make a system fairer
- Census - an occasion on which government officials count the people who live in a country and record other information about them
- Stipulate - to say what is allowed or what is necessary
- Ordinance - an official order by a government, king, queen etc
- Amendment - a change made to a law or agreement
- Prerequisite - something that must exist or happen before something else is possible
- Mandatory - something that is mandatory must be done, or is demanded by law
- Fray - a fight or argument
- Ill-considered - made or done without careful thought
- Paternalism - a system in which someone in authority advises and helps people but also controls them by not letting them make their own decisions and choices
- Militate against something - to make something more difficult to do or less likely to happen
- Liberal - accepting different opinions and ways of behaving and tending to be sympathetic to other people
- Infrastructure - the set of systems within a place or organization that affect how well it operates, for example the telephone and transport systems in a country
- Incentive - something that makes you want to do something or to work harder, because you know that you will benefit by doing this
- Excluding - used for saying that you are not including someone or something in what you are saying
- Marginalised - to make someone or something seem not important or relevant
- Sworn-in - to make someone give a formal promise in a law court or at an official ceremony
- Functional - operating in the correct way
- Upheld - if a court of law upholds something such as a claim, it says that it is correct
- Temptation - a strong feeling of wanting to have or to do something, especially something that is bad for you

- Persuade - to make someone agree to do something by giving them reasons why they should
- Take your cue from someone - to behave in the same way as someone else, because you think that is the right thing to do
- Recasting - to change the way that someone or something is or appears to be
- Desist - to stop doing something
- Exceptional - extremely good or impressive in a way that is unusual
- Circumstance - a fact or condition that affects a situation
- Breach - a failure to follow a law or rule
- Grassroots - relating to or involving ordinary people, especially in politics
