Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Dangerous tactics: on recent Maoist attacks"
- Tactic - a particular method or plan for achieving something
- Militarisation - act of assembling and putting into readiness for war or other emergency
- Uptick - a small increase
- Own up - to admit that you have done something bad or embarrassing
- Predecessor - the person who had a job or official position before someone else
- Valley - a low area of land between mountains or hills, usually with a river flowing through it
- Amid - if something happens amid particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
- Setback - a problem that delays or that stops progress or makes a situation worse
- Earmark - to decide to use something, especially money, for a particular purpose
- Left-wing - someone who is left-wing is considered to have socialist aims and ideas, for example that property, money, and power should be shared more equally
- Extremism - a tendency to have beliefs or opinions that are considered to be extremely unreasonable by most people
- Paramilitary - a paramilitary group is organized like an army but is not official and often not legal
- Welfare - the health and happiness of people
- Haphazard - done in a way that does not seem to be carefully planned or organized
- Outreach - the practice of providing help and advice to people in a community before they have to ask for it
- Hitherto - until the present time
- Retreat - to avoid a dangerous, unpleasant, or embarrassing situation, especially by moving away from it
- Base - a place from which an activity can be planned, started, or carried out
- Repression - the use of force or violence to control people
- Guerrilla - a member of a military group that is not official and usually wants to change a political situation
- Alleged - claimed to be true, even though this has not been proved
- Revolutionary - relating to or supporting a political revolution
- Peasant - someone who works on another person’s farm or on their own small farm
- Merger - the process of combining two companies or organizations to form a bigger one
- Outlaw - to make something illegal
- Consolidate - to make the power, position, or achievements you already have stronger or more effective so that they are likely to continue
- Deprivation - a situation in which people do not have basic things that they need to live a comfortable life
- Socio-economic - involving a combination of social and economic matters
- Uplift - to make someone feel happier or more hopeful
- Rely - to depend on or trust someone or something
- Wage - to start and to continue a war or a fight
- Intention - a plan in your mind to do something
- Violent - involving the use of physical force, with the deliberate intention of causing damage to property or injury or death to people
- Gross - gross actions are extremely bad and are considered immoral by most people
- Mindless - mindless people do not think about what they are doing
- Misreading - to understand or judge a person or situation wrongly
- Disband - if a group of people disbands or is disbanded, its members stop working together
- Authoritarianism - the belief that people with power should control what other people can do, or a situation in which this happens
- Insurgency - an attempt by a group of people to take control of their country by force
- Crossfire - bullets coming from two directions, fired by two people or armies who are shooting at each other

- Whodunnit - a book or film usually about a murder, in which you do not know who committed the murder until the end
- Shed light on something - to provide new information that helps you understand something
- Consulate - the government building in which a consul works
- Consul - a government official sent to live in another country and look after their own country’s citizens and business interests there
- Critical of - expressing an opinion when you think something is wrong or bad
- Crown Prince - a prince who will become king after the present king or queen dies
- Paperwork - the documents that you need for a particular activity or occasion
- Contradict - to say that the opposite of what someone has said is true
- Amid - in the middle of or surrounded by
- Mounting - increasing, especially in a way that makes a situation worse
- Fist-fight - a fight in which people use their fists to hit each other
- Subsequently - after something else happened
- Fire - to remove someone from their job
- Influential - able to influence the way other people think or behave
- Deputy - someone whose job is the second most important in a department or organization, and who takes the responsibilities of the most important person in some situations
- Maintain - to continue to say that something is true, even if other people do not believe you
- Rogue - dishonest
- Suspect - a person believed to have committed a crime or done something wrong
- Extradite - to send someone accused of a crime back to the country where the crime was committed for a trial
- Turn down - to not accept an offer or request
- Dismember - to cut or pull someone’s body into pieces
- Dissolve - if a solid substance dissolves in a liquid, it is mixed into the liquid so that it becomes included in it
- Aide - someone whose job is to help another person in their work
- Persuade - to make someone agree to do something by giving them reasons why they should
- Perpetrator - someone who has committed a crime or a violent or harmful act
- Bring something to light - if facts are brought to light or come to light, people discover them
- Refuel - if you refuel a vehicle or aircraft, or if it refuels, you put more fuel in it
- Significant - very important
- Stalemated - if people or discussions are stalemated, they are unable to make progress
- Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
- Diplomatic - relating to the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
- Forum - an organized event or meeting at which people discuss something
- Get away - to escape from a person or place
- International community - political leaders and important organizations from all parts of the world
