Key Highlights of UJALA Scheme

  • Launch: January 2015 

    Objective of this Scheme:

    • To minimize the energy consumption with the help of energy efficient bulbs. 
    • Increase the awareness on using efficient equipment that can reduce electricity bills. 
    • Also, help to preserve the environment. 

      Targets of the scheme

      • Replacing 77 Crore incandescent bulbs with LEDs by 2019. 

        Companies involved in implementing UJALA

        • Electricity Distribution Company 
        • Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) 
        • NTPC Ltd, 
        • PFC, 
        • REC, and Power Grid 

          Eligibility criteria

          • Every grid-connected consumer having a metered connection can get the LED bulbs at about 40% of the market price. 
          • Minimum of 2 to a maximum of 10 LED bulbs can be availed by consumers. 

            Prices of appliances under UJALA

            • 9W LED bulbs to cost Rs 70, 
            • 20W LED tube light to cost Rs 220 
            • For the UJALA appliances, Consumers appealed not to pay any amount over and above the prices fixed by EESL. 

              Benefits

              • Consumers can procure the energy efficient bulbs at a cheaper price (40% lesser than the market price). 
              • Energy and electricity bills can be saved. 
              • Greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced. 
              • Three-year warranty on every LED is provided by EESL. 
              • The implementing agencies provided the toll-free number to register complaints on faulty pieces.
