International Current Affairs
  • Today (28th September) is World Rabies day.
    • World Rabies Day is an international campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organization with headquarters in the US and UK. 
    • Theme of World Rabies day 2018 : ‘Rabies: Share the message. Save a life’.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to the swearing-in ceremony of Maldives' President-elect, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
National Current Affairs
  • Nation paid homage to great freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his 111th Birth Anniversary today.
  • The 191st Gunners Day was celebrated today.
    • The Regiment of Artillery in India was raised on September 28, 1827 as 5 Bombay Mountain Battery as part of the Bombay Army in the Presidency of Bombay and it's now celebrated as Gunners' Day.
    • Note : They're known as gunners as they handled guns and artillery equipment.
  • PM Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Army exhibition 'Parakram Parv' in Rajasthan's Jodhpur to mark the 2nd anniversary of the Surgical Strikes by Indian security forces along the LoC. 
  • The Supreme Court today lifted the centuries-old ban on entry of women aged between 10 and 50 years in Sabarimala Temple (Kerala), thereby allowing women of all ages to enter the 800-year-old temple. 
    • Note : The women in menstruating age were restricted from entering the temple as its presiding deity, Lord Ayyappa, is considered to be a celibate.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today barred Bandhan Bank from opening new branches, and also ordered freezing of the bank's CEO salary over failure to stick to shareholding rules.
  •  
    • Note : Headquartered in Kolkata, Bandhan, which started as a micro-finance company in 2001, received banking licence by Reserve Bank of India in 2014.
  • After a meeting with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj at the UN General Assembly, Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has announced that he was assured that India will continue to import oil despite US sanctions
    • This comes amidst reports that India, Iran's second-biggest oil importer, will cut its import by nearly half from earlier this year, ahead of the sanctions.
  • Multilateral lender Asian Development Bank (ADB) is going to provide US $150 million loan for establishing first multi-skills park in central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh
    • This new flagship GSP campus will be established in state capital Bhopal from where about 20,000 people are expected to be benefited.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The state governments of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)  to build a ₹250-crore ropeway connecting  two renowned Sikh and Hindu shrines. 
    • The 3.5 km-long ropeway project, expected to be completed in three years, will connect the birthplace of Khalsa Panth at Takht Kesgarh Sahib in Punjab and Himachal's Mata Naina Devi temple. 
New Appointments
  • 1984-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, S S Deswal has been appointed as the Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).  
    • He will hold post for period up to his superannuation on August 2021.
  • 1984-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Rajni Kant Misra has been appointed as the Director General of Border Security Force (BSF). 
    • He is going to replace K K Sharma, who will retire at the end of this month.  
    • He has been tasked to head BSF for period up to his superannuation on August 31, 2019. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the administrative body for association football in Europe,  has announced that Germany will host the 2024 European Championship.
    • Important Note : This is Germany's first major football championship since the World Cup 2006.
  • The BCCI's All India Women's Selection Committee today announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women's World Twenty20 in Guyana. 
    • The Indian team will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur, while Smriti Mandhana will be the vice-captain.
