1.Reiterate (verb): दोहराया
Meaning: say something again or a number of times, typically for emphasis or clarity.
Synonyms: repeat, say again, restate, retell, recapitulate, go over (and over), iterate, rehearse.
Example: He reiterated the commitment to pursue more reforms, especially in areas where the Index still rates India poorly among 190 countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set for his government the target of entering the top 50 in the Bank’s index, from the 142nd rank India was placed at in 2014 soon after he assumed office.
2.Ironic (adjective): व्याजोक्तिरूप
Meaning: using words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning; containing or exemplifying irony.
Example: It’s both fitting and ironical that there is no better way to describe what’s happening now, other than to say sexual harassment is ‘trending’. The details of the high profile indictments that have happened so far, mostly in the U.S., have helped blow the lid off the silence and complicity that allowed powerful men to be impudent sexual predators.
3.Mould (verb) : ढालना
Meaning: form (an object) out of malleable material.
Synonyms: shape, form, fashion, model, work, construct, frame, make, create, configure, manufacture.
Example: The visionary behind Zionism, Theodor Herzl moulded the Zionist movement into a demand for a Jewish homeland in the last decade of the 19th century.
4.Pogrom (noun): एक विशेष जातीय समूह का एक सामूहिक हत्याकांड, विशेष रूप से रूस या पूर्वी यूरोप में यहूदियों.
Meaning: an organized massacre of a particular ethnic group, in particular that of Jews in Russia or eastern Europe.
Synonyms: massacre, slaughter, wholesale slaughter, mass slaughter, mass killing, mass murder, mass homicide, mass execution, night of the long knives, annihilation, extermination, decimation, carnage, bloodbath, bloodletting, butchery, genocide.
Example: The immediate provocation was the ruthless pogroms carried out by Czarist Russia that caused a large exodus of Jews. These Jewish émigrés had to be settled somewhere; why not give them a homeland of their own? And why not Palestine as their homeland, from where they were forced out (according to the Israeli narrative) centuries ago?
5.Galvanize (verb) : प्रेरित करना
Meaning: shock or excite (someone) into taking action.
Synonyms: jolt, shock, startle, impel, stir, spur, prod, urge, motivate, stimulate, electrify, excite, rouse, arouse, awaken, invigorate, fire, fuel, animate, vitalize, energize, exhilarate.
Example: Weizmann galvanised himself and all Zionists, in Britain and in America. Hundreds of telegrams flooded the Foreign Office. Montagu too got active and prepared an anti-Zionist statement, but had no organised movement behind him. He was isolated.
6.Defer (verb) : टालना
Meaning: put off (an action or event) to a later time; postpone.
Synonyms: postpone, put off, adjourn, delay, hold over/off, put back, carry over.
Example: This time, one more member of the cabinet opposed the proposed declaration, arguing: “Zionism was sentimental idealism, which would be never realised and with which the British Government should have nothing to do.” A decision was deferred again.
7.Innocuous (adjective) : अहानिकर
Meaning: not harmful or offensive.
Synonyms: harmless, safe, non-dangerous, non-poisonous, non-toxic, non-irritant, innocent.
Example: Indians and the ‘Indian National Anthem’ being adjudged the best by UNESCO is probably the most common fake news going around the Internet. While this false information may have been innocuous, it captures the larger menace we face today. With the advent of new age digital and social media, fake news has pervaded all spheres of life, political and social.
8.Fabricate (verb) : निर्माण
Meaning: invent (something) in order to deceive.
Synonyms: forge, falsify, fake, counterfeit, make up, invent.
Example: Claire Wardle of First Draft, a UK-based non-profit organisation which is now part of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard, categorised misinformation into seven categories, namely satire or parody, misleading content, imposter content, fabricated content, false connection, false content and manipulated content.
9.Umpteen: अनेक
Meaning: indefinitely many; a lot of.
Example: Umpteen number of news/information portals are being set up as there are few entry barriers unlike in the traditional media. In addition, growing polarisation of society on ideological lines has made the job of spreading fake news easier.
10.Disseminate (verb) : प्रसारित करना
Meaning: spread (something, especially information) widely.
Synonyms: spread, circulate, distribute, disperse, diffuse, proclaim, promulgate, propagate, publicize, communicate, pass on, make known, put about.
Example: Today, it is extensively being fed and triggered through the Internet. Provocative content, inaccurate information, doctored videos, and pictures are being disseminated through various online and mobile platforms. The platforms serve like nodal agencies distributing unverified information.
