Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Course correction — on GST Council's alterations"
  • Alteration - the process of making a change in the appearance or form of something
  • Regime - a system of rules that control something
  • Sustain -  to provide the conditions in which something can happen or exist
  • Conciliatory - intended to show that you care about the feelings or opinions of someone who is angry or upset with you
  • Stance -  an attitude or view about an issue that you state clearly
  • Oversee - to watch something in order to check that it works or happens in the way that it should
  • Compliance -  the practice of obeying a law, rule, or request
  • Paperwork - the documents that you need for a particular activity or occasion
  • Yarn - cotton, wool
  • Soothe - to make something less serius or painful
  • Bulwark - something that protects you from dangerous or unpleasant situations
  • At the behest of someone - because someone has asked for something or said it must happen
  • Apparent - easy to see or understand
  • Shortcoming - a fault or problem that makes someone or something less effective
  • Akin to something - similar to something
  • Turnover - the value of the goods and services that a company sells in a particular period of time
  • Compliance -  the practice of obeying a law, rule, or request
  • Fledgling - new and without experience
  • Spur - to encourage an activity or development or make it happen faster
  • Pan out - if a situation pans out in a particular way, it develops in that way
  • Staggered - very surprised and shocked
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Amidst - if something happens amidst particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
  • Flurry - a short period of activity or emotion
  • Profiteering - to make large profits by charging high prices for things that people need and cannot get anywhere else
  • Cramp - to limit someone / something
  • Impeccable - perfect in every way
  • Rationale - the set of reasons that something such as a plan or belief is based on
  • Resist - to stop yourself from doing something
  • Tweak - to make small changes in order to improve something
  • Warrant - to make an action seem reasonable or necessary

  • Adversary - an enemy or opponent
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
  • Altering - changing
  • Provincial - of or relating to the parts of a country outside the capital or the large cities

  • Unification - the process of uniting groups or countries
  • The status quo - the present situation, or the way that things usually are
  • At loggerheads - disagreeing very strongly with someone
  • Restructuring - to organize something such as a company in a different way so that it will operate better
  • Abolishing - to officially get rid of a law, system, practice etc
  • Monarchy - a type of government in which a country is ruled by a king or queen
  • Hardline - strict or extreme in your beliefs or opinions, and not willing to change them
  • Branch off - to leave the main part of something
  • Unflinching - not changing or stopping, despite difficulties
  • Steadfast - not changing your opinions or actions, because you have a strong belief in someone or something
  • Prevailing - existing at a particular time or in a particular place
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Fare - used for saying how well or how badly someone does something
  • Relatively - in comparison with someone or something similar
  • Haul - to succeed in reaching a higher position using a lot of effort
  • Perceive - to understand or think about something in a particular way
  • Heft - power or strength
  • Align - to give your support publicly to a group, political party, or country
  • Relent - to change your mind about not allowing something to happen or not letting someone do something
  • Perhaps - used for saying that you are not certain about something, or that something may or may not be true
  • Inevitable - impossible to avoid or prevent
  • Adversary - an enemy or opponent
