The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For IBPS PO 2017

Vocabulary is an important part of English that helps you deal with all kinds of questions in objective as well as descriptive papers of various exams. Example: On his second day in the State, Mr. Singh lauded the role of the police force, which lost 25 personnel this year in militant attacks, the highest in the past four years.

1. Laud [lawd]
Verb: to praise; extol.
Noun: a song or hymn of praise.
Synonyms: admire, adore, celebrate, commend, compliment, eulogize, extol, honor, revere, approve, bless, boost, flatter, glorify, hymn, magnify, reverence, stroke, venerate, worship.
Antonyms: abhor, blame, censure, condemn.
Example: Not only J&K but the whole nation is proud of your bravery and valor in facing terrorism sponsored by the neighbouring country,” said Mr. Singh.

2. Valor [val-er]
Noun: boldness or determination in facing great danger, especially in battle; heroic courage; bravery.
Synonyms: boldness, courage, derring-do, determination, fearlessness, firmness, fortitude, gallantry, grit, heroism, prowess, tenacity, backbone, dash, defiance, fight, guts, hardihood.
Antonyms: cowardice, fear, irresolution, meekness.

Example: The high-level Congress group, headed by Dr. Singh, met a number of delegations in Jammu, including groups representing women, minorities, migrants from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, besides prominent civil society members.

3. Delegation [del-i-gey-shuh n]
Noun: a group or body of delegates; the body of delegates chosen to represent a political unit, as a state, in an assembly.
Synonyms: appointment, apportioning, authorization, charge, commissioning, committal, consignment, conveyance, conveying, deputation, devolution, installation, investiture, mandate, nomination, ordination, reference.
Antonyms: keeping.

Example: The police used batons to quell the protest and later arrested 11 persons for the violence.

4. Baton [buh-ton, ba-, bat-n]
Noun: a wand used by a conductor; a rod of lightweight metal fitted with a weighted bulb at each end and carried and twirled by a drum major or majorette.
Synonyms: protection
cudgel, mace, nightstick, rod, truncheon, wand, billy, blackjack, club, staff, billy club.

5. Quell [kwel]
Verb: to suppress; put an end to; extinguish; to vanquish; subdue; to quiet or allay (emotions, anxieties, etc.).
Synonyms: annihilate, conquer, crush, extinguish, overcome, put down, quench, silence, stamp out, stifle, subdue, kill, overpower, queer, stop, subjugate.
Antonyms: build up, compliment, encourage, help.

Example: In a span of two weeks, almost 300,000 Rohingya have crossed over to Bangladesh from the northern Rakhine state in Myanmar, putting Bangladesh under immense strain and compelling the refugees to find shelter in squalid, unsanitary camps scattered along the Myanmar-Bangladesh border.

6. Squalid [skwol-id, skwaw-lid]
Adjective: foul and repulsive, as from lack of care or cleanliness; neglected and filthy; wretched; miserable; degraded; sordid.
Synonyms: dingy, fetid, filthy, grimy, muddy, musty, ramshackle, seedy, shabby, sordid, wretched, abominable, base, broken-down, decayed.
Antonyms: bright, clean, clear, good.

Example: Excluded from the 135 officially recognised ethnic groups, the Rohingya have been harassed and hounded by the Myanmar authorities for decades.

7. Hound [hound]
Noun: one of any of several breeds of dogs trained to pursue game either by sight or by scent, especially one with a long face and large drooping ears; any dog; a mean, despicable person.
Verb: to hunt or track with hounds, or as a hound does; pursue; to pursue or harass without respite; to incite (a hound) to pursuit or attack; urge on.
Synonyms: beagle, afghan, airedale, basset, canine, dachshund, mongrel, mutt, pointer.

Example: The flight of the Rohingya has quickened in the past two weeks, but Rohingya refugees have been trying to find a home outside their native Rakhine for years now, braving human traffickers and fraught conditions on rickety, overcrowded boats.

8. Fraught [frawt]
Adjective: filled or laden (with).
Noun: a load; cargo; freight (of a ship).
Synonyms: charged, filled, replete, abounding, attended, bristling, heavy, laden, stuffed.
Antonyms: empty.

9. Rickety [rik-i-tee]
Adjective: likely to fall or collapse; shaky; feeble in the joints; tottering; infirm; old, dilapidated, or in disrepair; irregular, as motion or action.
Synonyms: broken, decrepit, derelict, dilapidated, flimsy, ramshackle, shaky, wobbly, feeble, fragile, frail, imperfect, infirm, insecure, jerry-built.
Antonyms: firm, stable, steady, unshaky.

Example: In doing so, he overlooked the atrocious crimes committed in the neighbourhood and almost turned a blind eye to both the untold sufferings caused to the refugees fleeing persecution and the resulting difficulties that a resource-constrained country such as Bangladesh has been put to — a country which Indian politicians and officials frequently refer to as a role model of friendship in India’s neighbourhood.

10. Atrocious [uh-troh-shuh s]
Adjective: extremely or shockingly wicked, cruel, or brutal; shockingly bad or tasteless; dreadful; abominable.
Synonyms: awful, barbaric, heinous, lousy, rotten, scandalous, shocking, bad, beastly, desperate, diabolical, fiendish, flagrant.
Antonyms: good, magnificent, wonderful, inoffensive.
