July 28 Is World Hepatitis Day: Eliminate Hepatitis
- July 28, 2017 is World Hepatitis Day, one of only four disease-specific days recognized by the World Health Organization. Around the world and around the United States organizations and individuals come together on this day to raise awareness of the global burden of viral hepatitis and to influence change.
- This year's World Hepatitis Day theme is "Eliminate Hepatitis," and it provides an opportunity to highlight the serious impact hepatitis B and hepatitis C have around the globe and in the United States and to join in the call for action to prevent deaths and stem the tide of new infections.

NITI Aayog clears six proposals for high-tech public transport
- Niti Aayog cleared half-a-dozen proposals of the transport ministry exploring options to improve public transport. which will make mMass rapid transportation technologies such as hyperloop, metrino and pod taxis a reality in India after
- The transport ministry has formed a six member committee, headed by a former top official of Railways, to study safety parameters associated with these technologies and global practices.
- Something like metrino (pod taxis) is almost one tenth of the cost of the metro, so there's a cost advantage as well.
- However, technologies such as hyperloop can take some time but we would like them to come to India
No immediate arrests in dowry harassment cases
- A Family Welfare Committee (FWC) in every district will scrutinise dowry harassment cases before local police can arrest the accused, the Supreme Court said laying down a set of guidelines to curb misuse of the law.
- Indian Penal Code’s Section 498A has been criticised for giving “disgruntled women” a legal option to harass their husbands

CAC adopts Codex norms for three spices
- In a significant move, the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) adopted three Codex standards for black, white and green pepper, cumin and thyme paving the way for an universal agreement on identifying quality spices in various countries.
- The adoption of Codex standards for the three spices will help evolve a common standardisation process for their global trade and availability.
- The Codex Alimentarius or “Food Code” is a collection of standards, guidelines and codes of practice adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
- The Commission, also known as CAC, is the central part of the joint FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations)/WHO (World Health Organisation) Food Standards Programme.
- It was established by FAO and WHO to protect consumer health and promote fair practices in food trade.

Ajay Singh strikes bronze in Asian Youth Weightlifting
- India’s Ajay Singh has clinched the bronze medal in Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships to take his country’s tally to three medals in Kathmandu last evening.
- The weightlifter finished at the third spot in 77 kg men's junior category after lifting 143 kg in snatch and 172 kg in clean and jerk.
- Earlier, S. Nirpupama Devi had bagged a bronze medal in 69 kg women youth category while Konsam Ormila Devi had won gold in 44kg weight category
Prannoy climbs to 17th spot in BWF rankings
- Courtesy his US Open Grand Prix Gold title triumph, Indian shuttler HS Prannoy has jumped six places to be at 17th position in the latest BWF world rankings.
- Parupalli Kashyap, who reached his first final at US Open in more than two years after recovering from multiple injuries, also gained 12 places to be at the 47th spot.
- Sameer Verma, who has qualified as the fourth Indian for the World Championship, jumped four spots to be 28th in the standings.
- With Prannoy improving his position, India have four men in the top-20. Kidambi Srikanth, who clinched back-to-back titles at Indonesia and Australia, is the highest ranked Indian at number 8.
- Ajay Jayaram is ranked 16th, while B Sai Praneeth is 19th spot after losing a place.
- In women’s category, PV Sindhu remained 5th while Saina Nehwal dropped a spot to be world number 16. They are the only two Indians in the top-25.

NPCI gets RBI nod to operate Bharat Bill Payment System
- National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the umbrella organization for all retail payment systems in the country, has received the final nod from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to function as the Bharat Bill Payment Central Unit and operate the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS)
- The final clearance from RBI comes almost a year after NPCI launched the BBPS pilot project to make payment of utility bills easier. The pilot started on 31 August with eight BBPS operating units that had received in-principle approval from RBI.
- The total number of Bharat Bill Payment Operating Units certified by NPCI now stands at 24. The certified units include three public sector banks (Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India and Indian Overseas Bank), 10 private sector banks, five cooperative banks and six non-bank biller aggregators.
- As per the framework, a customer will be able to pay several bills such as electricity, telephone, water, gas, and direct-to-home television at a single location—physical or electronic—and receive instant confirmation once the payment is made.
- Payments through BBPS may be made using cash, transfer cheques and electronic modes. Bill aggregators and banks, who will function as operating units, will carry out these transactions for the customers.
RBI sets up Supervisory Colleges for six Scheduled Commercial Banks
- Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has informed that Supervisory Colleges have been setup for the following six Scheduled Commercial Banks which have sizeable international presence:-
- State Bank of India, ICICI Bank Ltd., Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Axis Bank Ltd. and Punjab National Bank.
- The objectives of the colleges are to enhance information exchange and cooperation among supervisors, to improve understanding of the risk profile of the banking group and thereby facilitate more effective supervision of internationally active banks.

Former Minister Ashwani Kumar named for Japanese honour
- Japan has named former Union Minister Ashwani Kumar for its prestigious 'Order of the Rising Sun' award for his contribution to fostering Japan-India ties,
- Kumar has been selected for the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, which is the highest category of decoration, in recognition of distinguished accomplishments of individuals. Ratan Tata was also conferred the decoration in the past
