Daily Session to Crack English (Day-1): Important Preparation Tips & Syllabus for IBPS PO 2017:
Dear Aspirants, Welcome to Our Daily Session to Crack English, in Today’s Session we are going to discuss about the important preparation tips and Syllabus of English Section for Upcoming IBPS PO/Clerk 2017. We all knew that IBPS Exams was scheduled from September 2017, and this is the right time to start your preparation. This Session will help to gear up your preparation.
Preparation Tips:
English is the easiest; It is least prepared and most avoided section, so it is found difficult while attempting exams.
Practice in LSRW method: (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing).
· Listen to English news bulletins and try to interpret meaning.
· Speak and convey to your friends in English what you have learnt from listening news.
· Reading is the most important method for your exams; if you follow above two methods reading will be easy for you.
· Start reading from your interesting genres like comics, thrillers, novels, romance, filmy critics etc.., whenever you start reading set timer.
· If you read one page in one hour means next day try to reduce it to 50 minutes like that.
· When you get practice in reading start reading newspapers daily.
o Practise reading in systems because, for online tests systems only given to you. So you won’t find it difficult at that time.
o Read newspapers like Economic times, the Hindu, Indian Express, Business line.., preference should be given to Editorial page, Business page, World page, economics and quick scan to sports column. This will help you in English as well as GK and current events.
o Reading passage in fast and sensible way is important, correct pauses, correct pronunciation, in a sensible way itself make you understand its meaning. Initially it takes time to interpret meaning but by regular practice you can overcome it.
· All the three above said methods are followed in regular manner you automatically can attempt all those section in English without fear.
· English is a language, you just need to understand it by regular practise. For English section you don’t need to spent lot of time. Daily one hour in regular is more than enough for it.
· Familiarise yourself with specific terminologies like economics, business, banking, finance, debit, micro and macro economies, schemes, repo rates.., and it will give you ideas about the concept of the passages.
· Mostly Vocabularies are asked from newspapers, so regular reading and identifying tough words from newspaper will help to overcome this problem as well.
· Grammar play vital role and helps you in understanding language easily.
Now let us Discussion about the Syllabus of English Section in IBPS PO/Clerk 2017 Prelims Examination:
Expected Question types in English Section (Prelims Examination):-
· Reading comprehension
· Jumbled sentences
· Cloze set
· Double fillers
· Error Spotting & Sentence improvement
Tips for Comprehension:-
Directions: Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words/ phrases have been given in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions. (Questions – 6; Synonyms – 2; Antonyms – 2; Total – 10)
· First read the questions, go through the passage quickly. (If you done reading practice daily then it will be very easy to go through the passage quickly)
· While reading the passage you may find answers for the questions that you have already read, if you find difficulties or confusion skip the question.
· Don’t answer in order, keep the time factor in mind and then give preference to synonym and antonym questions.
· If you think the passage is lengthy and if don’t have enough time to go through the full passage, then read first two paragraphs and last paragraph of passage. First para give introduction second supporting points to introduction and last conclusion and sumups.
· Accuracy is very important.
Tips to Attend Jumbled Sentences:-
Directions:Rearrange the following six sentences (A), (B), (C), (D), (E) and (F) in the proper sequence to form a meaningful paragraph and then answer the questions given below.
· Read the sentences one by one carefully without any presumption and find the main theme of the passage.
3 main ways to arrange sentences:
o Top type (T):-You can only find the first statement which introduces the passage or title. Even last sentence which gives conclusion might not be known.
o Top to bottom type (TB):-Find first and last sentences; get lead from 1st, then sentences which leads to last in this central or midpoint might not be known.
o Top mid and bottom (TMB):-You may find first, last and main theme of the passage and kept it as midpoint. Then find the link sentence/s for 1st and mid sentence. Then link sentence/s for mid and last sentence.
· The first sentence which introduces the paragraph may be about person, organisation, policy, banking terms..etc,.
· At the same time each sentence will give lead to the next sentence, all you need is to follow the lead or continuity of the story line.
Simple Trick: If sentences starting with- so, but, now; then these have to be ordered as- but, so, now.
Tips to Attend Cloze Test:
Directions:-In the passage given below there are 5 blanks, each followed by a word given in bold. Even blank has four alternative words given in options (A), (B), (C), and (D). You have to choose which word will best suit the respective blank. Mark (E) as your answer if the word given in bold after the blank is your answer i.e “No change is required”.
· Read the passage twice in order to understand the concept clearly and to know the message behind the passage.
· If 1st blank is found to be confusing skip it and go to the 2nd blank from which you may get the clue to blank 1.
· Read the options, if you tend to know the meaning of all options, then try to suit the appropriate word. Eliminate options which seem to be inappropriate, your vocabulary skill will play the vital role here.
· Remember: Cloze test consist of passage with sentences, so that must connect with each other. Do not make the mistake of treating each sentence as individual one and filling in the blanks accordingly.
Simple Tricks:
- Blanks after articles “a, an, the” use singular nouns.
- Blank after possessive pronouns (my, our, your, his, her, it, their) must be nouns.
Tips to Attend Double fillers:
Directions : This sentence has two blanks, each blank indicating that something has been omitted. Choose the set of words for the blanks which best fits the meaning of the sentence ass whole.
· A passage which has certain words missing from it. It follows logically that to ace such an assessment, candidates must have a strong command over English language, along with a flair for grammar and good vocabulary. And it is important to understand the flow and context of the passage. So, read thoroughly.
· Link the sentences together.
· Choose the appropriate type of word to fill in, and eliminate irrelevant options.
· Go with frequently used tough words in newspapers.
Tips to attend Error Spotting &Sentence improvement:
Error Spotting : Read each sentence to find out whether there is any grammatical or idiomatic error in it. The error any, will be in one part of the sentence. The number of that part is the answer. If there is no error, the answer is (e):-
Sentence improvement: Directions: In the following questions, a sentence has been given with some of its parts in bold. To make the sentence grammatically correct or correct the spelling mistakes, you have to replace the bold part with the correct alternative given below. If the sentence is correct as it is, give e) as your answer (ie No correction required).
· Check whether the statement has error or not by reading it carefully and try to translate it in your mother tongue. If you translate it without struck then there is no error in it.
· Check the spelling errors if any and correct usage of phrasal verbs and idioms.
· To attend maximum questions in error spotting and sentence improvement with accuracy, you need to know the basic grammar rules, you no need to mug up all the grammar rules, you have to understand the important and essential grammar rules i.e Articles, noun, pronoun, subject verb agreement, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction and tense.
· Practising more previous year question papers and discussing it regularly will help you understand the question format of error spotting and sentence improvement.
Accuracy is the very important, so make sure that you are marking the exact correct answers for each question.
