i. 10 November: World Science Day for Peace and Development
ii. The World Science Day for Peace and Development 2016 was observed on 10 November 2016 across the world. The theme for 2016 is Celebrating Science Centres and Science Museums. To mark the day, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) conducted several discussions, special campaigns, visits to science museums for school children, etc to raise awareness of benefits of science worldwide.
i. Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister PrakashJavadekar on 10 November 2016 inaugurated Smart India Hackathon 2017, world’s largest digital national building initiative.The Government also unveiled the first set of 250 problem statements that the students will be required to solve during the Hackathon that will take place in early 2017.
ii. Smart India Hackathon 2017 is aimed at reaching out to all technology institutions in India and challenge students to offer innovative solutions to the daunting problems faced by our nation. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), University Grants Commission (UGC), i4c, MyGov, NASSCOM, RambhauMhalgiPrabodhiniand Persistent Systems will organize the initiative under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The International Competition Network (ICN) on 9 November 2016 announced that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) would host the 2018 ICN Annual Conference.The Conference will be held at Delhi in March–April 2018. By virtue of the event, CCI is also inducted as an ex-officio member of the steering group member of the ICN for a period of 3 years.
HP Cabinet Okays scheme to incentivise teachers' performance
The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet has approved "MukhyaMantriShikshakSammanYojana," which provides a one-year extension in service and cash incentive to teachers who would give 100% results consistently for five years. The scheme would be applicable to trained graduate teachers, post-graduate teachers, headmasters, and principals. The scheme is aimed at motivating the teachers.
Karnataka bans surge pricing by Ola, Uber taxis
The Karnataka HC on Thursday upheld the rules framed by the state government, banning cab-hailing apps like Ola and Uber from charging anything extra over the base fares. Uber filed a petition in June this year, seeking withdrawal of new rules, terming it as “anti-constitutional”. States including Delhi, Maharashtra and West Bengal have framed similar rules to ban surge pricing.

Ambani clan ranks 3rd on Asia's richest family list
India's Ambani family of the Reliance Group has ranked third on the Forbes list of Asia’s 50 Richest Families of 2016, with a wealth of $25.8 billion. Further, the Ambani clan topped among the 17 Indian families that featured on the list. Notably, the list was topped by South Korea’s Lee family of the Samsung Group.
SBI to Raise Rs 5,000cr in FY17
Country’s largest lender SBI will raise Rs 5,000 crore to fund infrastructure and affordable housing during the fiscal by issuing long-term infra bonds. The bank was accorded approval from the Executive Committee of its Central Board. The bonds are to be issued on a private placement basis in tranches. SBI said it will raise the money at an appropriate time in domestic & overseas market.
IMF supports PM Modi's efforts to fight corruption
International Monetary Fund , IMF has supported Prime Minister NarendraModi's efforts to fight corruption by demonetizing 500 and 1000 rupees notes but cautioned that the move has to be managed prudently. IMF spokesman Gerry Rice told reporters in Washington that the global body supports Modi government's measures to fight corruption and illicit financial flows in India.

Union Government launches PradhanMantriYuvaYojana
The Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) on 9 November 2016 launched the PradhanMantri YUVA Yojana to boost up an ecosystem of entrepreneurship for young people.
Highlights of the Yojana
The scheme was launched for the time period of over five years (2016-17 to 2020-21) with a project cost of 499.94 crore rupees. It will offer entrepreneurship education and training to around 7 lakh students in 5 years through 3050 Institutes. It will also offer easy access to information and mentor network, credit and advocacy to build a way-out for the youngsters. The institutes under the Yojana include 2200 Institutes of Higher Learning (colleges, universities, and premier institutes), 300 schools, 500 ITIs and 50 Entrepreneurship Development Centres. These institutes will carry out the training through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

Yatra Signs MoU with Uttarakhand
Online travel company Yatra.com has signed an agreement with the Uttarakhand government to promote homestays. Under the MoUYatra will promote all the state tourism approved homestays, wherein guests can rent a room in the home of a local family or the entire house. Yatra and Uttarakhand Tourism together will organise an orientation session for homestays.

Guy Ryder re-elected as Director-General of International Labour Organization
Guy Ryder on 7 November 2016 was re-elected as the Director-General (DG) of the International LabourOrganisation (ILO) for another five-year term. He will assume the post the on 1 October 2017.Ryder obtained 54 of the 56 votes cast by the titular members. He was the only candidate for the post.
Kamala Harris becomes first ever Indian-American to win U.S. Senator seat
California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris on 9 November 2016 became the first India-American to win the U.S. Senate seat from the state. Harris defeated fellow Democrat Loretta Sanchez from her own party. She is the first black woman elected to the upper chamber in more than two decades. She is also the sixth black individual to be elected to the U.S. Senate. Harris will replace Barbara Boxer who announced her retirement in 2014 after serving more than two decades in the Senate.
PramilaJayapal 1st Indian-American woman to enter US House
India-born PramilaJayapal on Wednesday won the Washington State Senate seat to become the first Indian-American woman to be elected to the US House of Representatives. Contesting the elections for the Democratic party, 52-year-old Jayapal secured 57% votes to defeat her opponent, Brady Walkinshaw. "We will have to fight for social justice as never before", Jayapal said.
Sharapova to return as UN goodwill ambassador
Tennis star Maria Sharapova will once again be a UN goodwill ambassador when her doping ban expires in April and she returns to international tennis competition, a UN statement said. The United Nations had suspended Sharapova's role as goodwill ambassador in March after she failed a drug test, putting a hold on a nine-year partnership with the UN Development Programme.
Marta Jakimowicz selected for Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 by Lalithakala Academy
Poland-born art critic Marta Jakimowicz was on 10 November 2016 selected for the Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 by the Karnataka LalithakalaAcademy.Presently, she is settled in Bengaluru. Other than her, portrait artist Baburao V Nadoni from Belagavi, and KK Makali from Bellary were also selected for the award. All the winners will be honoured with the cash prize of 50000 rupees.

India's 1st banking robot 'Lakshmi' launched
Kumbakonam-based City Union Bank on Thursday launched India's first banking robot called Lakshmi. The artificial intelligence powered robot, which will be the first on-site bank helper, can speak English, gesture, and engage in a life-like manner in conversations. Further, the robot can answer intelligently on more than 125 subjects including account balance and interest rates on loans.

Tejaswin Shankar Breaks National Record
Tejaswin Shankar smashed the 12-year-old national senior record in high jump with an effort of 2.26m at the 32nd National Junior Athletics Championships. In the process the 19-year old also won the gold medal. The earlier national senior record was held by Hari Shankar Roy of West Bengal. Tejaswin had won the gold in the National Open Athletics in Lucknow in September with a jump of 2.22m.
Singer, songwriter Leonard Cohen passes away at 82
Legendary Canadian singer, songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen has passed away aged 82, at his residence in Los Angeles. A post on his Facebook page today released a statement about the singer's death but did not provide further details. Born on September 21, 1934, Cohen was known for his songs like 'Hallelujah', 'Suzanne', and 'So Long, Marianne'.
