1. BRICS’ meeting on energy efficiency begins today

  • Two-day meeting of the BRICS nations working group for enhancing cooperation in energy efficiency and energy saving have started from today in Visakhapatnam.
  • This is the first meeting of the group in which participants from all BRICS countries are attending the meet.
  • During the deliberations, the BRICS countries will make presentations on measures taken by them in the field of energy saving and energy efficiency.
  • India will also showcase its efforts in energy saving, energy efficiency, in particular, the LED street lighting programme and Performance Achievement and Trade programme for Industrial energy efficiency.
  • This two-day meet of the Working Group is hosted by the Power Ministry.

What is BRICS :-

  • BRICS is the acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
  • The grouping was originally known as “BRIC” before the controversial inclusion of South Africa in 2010.
  • The BRICS members are all developing or newly industrialized country countries, but they are distinguished by their large, sometimes fast-growing economies and significant influence on regional affairs,all five are G-20 members.

2. PM Modi attends martyrdom anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attended a commemorative event to mark the 300th Martyrdom Anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur in New Delhi.
  • On the occasion, Prime Minister Modi has released a book and souvenir on the life of Banda Bahadur.

Know  about Banda Bahadur:-

  • Banda Singh Bahadur was born on 27 October 1670 in Jammu & Kashmir’s Poonch district.
  • His childhood name was Lachman Dev. At age of 15-year he left home to become an ascetic and was given the name Madho Das Bairagi.
  • He established a monastery at Nanded, on the bank of the river Godavari.
  • In September 1708, he was visited by Guru Gobind Singh ,who gave him the new name of Banda Singh Bahadur.

3. National mineral exploration policy unveiled

  • The National mineral exploration policy has been unveiled to adopt comprehensive exploration of non fuel and non coal mineral resources.
  • The objective is to set in motion a massive process for mineral exploration on the country that would give a major boost to the economy.
  • The new policy aims to bring together best of knowledge and experience, modern technology, trained manpower and financial resources on a collaborative platform.
  • Space technology would be used to check illegal mining by developing a mining surveillance system.

4. PM meets Indian athletes going to participate in Rio Olympic

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the athletes who will represent India at the forthcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
  • He interacted informally with the members of Indian contingent at Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi.
  • The Prime Minister wished them well for their performance in the world’s biggest sporting event.
  • So far, around 100 athletes from 13 sports disciplines have qualified for Rio Olympics.
  • This is the largest ever Indian contingent to be sent to Olympics.

5. Dharmendra Pradhan launches Pradhanmantri Ujjwala Yojna in MP

  • Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan has launched the Pradhanmantri Ujjwala Yojna in Madhya Pradesh at a function held in Shahdol.
  • The Centre will ensure that 35 lakh women belonging to poor households get benefit of the scheme in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Another 15 lakh belonging to non-BPL families will also benefit and will get LPG connections in the state.
  • About 60 out of 100 households in the country have LPG, in Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh only nine households have access to LPG fuel.
  • The Pradhanmantri Ujjwala Yojna will address the concerns of women living in such districts and bring clean LPG fuel to their kitchen.

6. President inaugurates smart village pilot project at Rashtrapati Bhavan

The President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee inaugurating the Smart Model Village Pilot Project, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in New Delhi on July 02, 2016. The Union Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation, Shri Chaudhary Birender Singh and other dignitaries are also seen.

  • President Pranab Mukherjee has inaugurated a smart model village pilot project at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
  • This initiative will be implemented in five selected villages in Haryana than later on it will be spread to the entire country.
  • The five villages which will be developed into the smart villages under this pilot project are Dhaula, Alipur, Harichandpur and Taj Nagar from Gurgaon district and Rojka Meo from Mewat district of Haryana.

7. Former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard passes away

  • Former Prime Minister of France Michel Rocard (85-year) passed away in Paris, France.
  • Rocard served as Prime Minister under President Francois Mitterrand from 1988 to 1991.

8. Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel passes away

  • Elie Wiesel (87-year) a Holocaust survivor and author who fought for peace, human rights and simple human decency has passed away.
  • He was a professor at the City College of New York from 1972 until he left four years later to become a humanities professor at Boston University.
  • Before that, Wiesel was a journalist in Paris and then New York.

9. FPI invests over Rs 3,700 cr into Indian equities in June

  • Foreign investors brought in over 3,700 crore rupees into Indian equities in June, mainly on hopes of a good monsoon.
  • According to data available with depositories, Foreign portfolio investors have invested a net of 3,713 crore in the stock market last month.
  • However, they pulled out 6,220 crore rupees from the debt market during the period under review.
  • So far this year, FPIs have invested 20,648 crore rupees in equities while withdrawing 12,105 crore rupees in the debt market, resulting in a net inflow of 8,543 crore rupees.

10. India to host world’s first MMA ‘Super Fight League’

  • India will be hosting the world’s first Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) ‘Super Fight League‘ from August 26 to October 1.
  • The franchise-based league will feature eight teams – Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Haryana, Bangalore, Punjab, Pune and Goa.
  • The league will be a platform for Indian MMA players like Anup Kumar, CJ Singh, Amit Roy, Dhruv Chaudhary to showcase their skills.
  • Each team will constitute nine Indian fighters and three international ones.
  • The championship will have an equal stage for women as a total of 96 fighters will be involved in both men and women combined.

11. Lewis Hamilton wins Austrian Grand Prix

  • Lewis Hamilton has won the Austrian Grand Prix after a dramatic last-lap collision with championship rival Nico Rosberg.
  • Rosberg appeared on course to claim his sixth victory of the season but crashed into Hamilton as the Briton attempted to pass his Mercedes team-mate around the outside of the turn and damaged his front wing, finishing fourth.
  • While Max Verstappen in a Red Bull was second and Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari was third.

12. Canada Open Badminton: Indian shuttlers bag twin crowns

  • Double bonanza for India at the Canada Open Grand Prix Badminton as B Sai Praneeth and men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy clinched twin crowns.
  • Praneeth thrashed South Korea’s Lee Hyun II, 21-12 21-10 to win the championsip in Calgary last night.
  • It was Praneet’s first final of the year.
  • Top seed doubles pair Manu and Reddy, who became the first Indian men’s doubles pair to qualify for the Rio Olympics, defeated local combo of Adrian Liu and Toby Ng 21-8 21-14 in a lop-sided final.

13. ICC relaxes Decision Review System for LBWs

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved a change to the Decision Review System (DRS) playing condition relating to the Leg before wicket (LBW) “Umpire’s Call”.
  • The decision will allow changes to the decision review system which will make it easier to overturn not-out LBW decisions.
  • The decision has been taken at ICC’s annual conference in Edinburgh.
  • As per the amendment, the size of the zone inside which half the ball needs to hit any part of the stumps for a not out decision.
  • Currently, half of the ball would need to be hitting a zone between the centre of leg and off stumps.
  • This amendment will come into effect from 1 October.

Note:-

  • The Umpire Decision Review System is a technology-based system used in the sport of cricket.
  • It was introduced in an attempt to eliminate incorrect umpiring decisions.
