Elite

Definition:  A select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society.
Usage:  Public opinion is influenced by the small elite who control the media.

Immortal

Definition:  1) that lives or lasts forever
2) famous and likely to be remembered forever
Usage:  The researcher argued that individuals come and go but genes are potentially immortal.

Offend

Definition:  1) to make someone feel upset because of something you say or do that is rude or embarrassing
2) to seem unpleasant to someone
3) to commit a crime or crimes
4)to be against what people believe is morally right
Usage : The smell from the farm offended some people.

Investigate

Definition:  1) to carefully examine the facts of a situation, an event, a crime, etc. to find out the truth about it or how it happened
2) to try to find out information about someone's character, activities, etc.
3) to find out information and facts about a subject or problem by study or research
Usage : The detective was sent to investigate the scene

Intricate

Definition:   Very complicated or detailed
Usage:  The architect's drawing of the building was a very intricate design.

Hypnosis

Definition:  an unconscious state in which someone can still see and hear and can be influenced to follow commands or answer questions
Usage:  He underwent hypnosis to treat his fear of water.

Exaggeration

Definition:  a statement or description that makes something seem larger, better, worse, or more important than it really is
Usage : The author exaggerates the difficulties which he had to face at the commencement of his career in his book.

Portrait

Definition:  1) a painting, drawing, or photograph of a person, especially of the head and shoulders
2) a detailed description of someone or something
Usage:  Lucian Freud has been asked to paint a portrait of the Queen.

Plausible

Definition:  1) reasonable and likely to be true
2) good at sounding honest and sincere, especially when trying to trick people
Usage : Her story sounded perfectly plausible.

Mimic

Definition : 1) to copy the way someone speaks, moves, behaves, etc., especially in order to makeother people laugh
2) to look or behave like something else
Usage:  He could mimic anybody reducing his friends to helpless laughter.

Disinclination

Definition : a lack of willingness to do something; a lack of enthusiasm for something
Usage:  There was a general disinclination to return to the office after lunch.

Provocative

Definition:  1) intended to make people angry or upset; intended to make people argue about something
2) intended to make someone sexually excited
Usage : It was one of his more provocative suggestions.

Philanthropist

Definition:  a rich person who helps the poor and those in need, especially by giving money
Usage:  He is a philanthropist and patron of the arts.

Illusion

Definition:  1) a false idea or belief, especially about someone or about a situation
2) something that seems to exist but in fact does not, or seems to be something that it is not
Usage : The video game is designed to give the illusion that you are in control of an airplane.

Nomination

Definition: the act of suggesting or choosing someone as a candidate in an election, or for a job or an award; the fact of being suggested for this
Usage: On Leo's death there were two main candidates for nomination as his replacement.
