Topic 1 : "Reasons and excuses for violence"
  • Excuse - a ​reason that you give to ​explain why you did something ​wrong
  • Provocation - action or speech that makes someone angry
  • Underlying - used to ​describe something on which something ​else is ​based
  • Unrest - a state of dissatisfaction / disturbance
  • Emerges - to ​appear by coming out of something or out from behind something
  • Trigger - an ​event or ​situation, etc. that ​causes something ​bad to ​start
  • Outrage - an extremely strong reaction of anger
  • Protest - an action expressing disapproval of or objection to something
  • Molestation - to ​touch or ​attack someone in a ​sexual way
  • Stationed - to assign to a specified place for a particular purpose, especially a military one
  • Contested - to participate in a competition to get something
  • Distrust - the ​feeling of not ​trusting someone or something
  • Dismantling - to get ​rid of something, usually over a ​period of ​time
  • Normalcy - the condition of being normal
  • Precisely - exactly
  • Resentment - to ​feel ​angry because you have been ​forced to ​accept someone or something that you do not like
  • Factual - using or consisting of ​facts
  • Assault - to make a physical attack
  • Spark - a first ​small ​event or ​problem that ​causes a much ​worse ​situation to ​develop
  • Perceived - become aware or conscious of (something)
  • Repressive - to ​control what ​people do, ​especially by using ​force
  • Subsequent - following (coming after something)
  • Protest - an action expressing disapproval of or objection to something
  • Aggravated - to make a ​bad ​situation ​worse
  • Out of harm’s way - in a safe place
  • Dispiriting - causing someone to lose enthusiasm and hope
  • Takeaway - a ​main ​message or ​piece of ​information that you ​learn from something you ​hear or ​read
  • Recur - occur again repeatedly
  • Eludes - escape from or avoid (a danger, enemy, or pursuer), in a skilful or cunning way
  • Defend - protect from harm or danger
  • Deployment - to send military troops into duty
  • Citing - refering / stating
  • Obtrusive - too ​noticeable
  • Alienation - to ​cause someone or a ​group of ​people to ​stop ​supporting and ​agreeing with you
  • Sporadic - occurring at irregular intervals or only in a few places
  • Crossfire - gunfire from two or more directions passing through the same area
  • Demolished - defeated
  • Persisting - continue to exist
  • Substantive - having a separate and independent existence
  • Densely -  ​containing a lot of ​matter in a ​small ​space
  • Accountability - responsibility
  • Fragile - broken (easily destroyed)
Topic 2 : "A misguided ban in Delhi"
  • Surge pricing - raising the price based on increasing demand
  • Aggregator - an organization that ​collects ​information from the internet ​pages of other ​businesses and puts it on a ​single ​website
  • Misguided - having faulty judgement or reasoning
  • Imposition - the ​introduction of a new ​law or ​system
  • Intervention - the ​act of ​becoming ​involved ​intentionally in a ​difficult ​situation
  • Congestion - to become too ​blocked or ​crowded and ​causing traffic jams
  • Clamp down on something - to take ​strong ​action to ​stop or ​limit a ​harmful or ​unwanted ​activity
  • Counterproductive - having the opposite of the desired (estimated) effect
  • Arbitrary - based on ​chance ​rather than being ​planned or ​based on ​reason
  • Unscrupulous - having or showing no moral principles (not honest or fair)
  • Transit - the carrying of people or things from one place to another
  • Inadequate - insufficient for a purpose
  • Determines - cause (something) to occur in a particular way or to have a particular nature
  • Outdoes - to do something ​better than someone ​else
  • Ply - to work ​regularly at something
  • Substantial - of considerable importance
  • Allaying - relieving pain / fear
  • Monopoly - to have ​complete ​control of something, ​especially an ​area of ​business, so that ​others have no ​share
  • For instance - for example
  • Commutes - travel some distance between one's home and place of work on a regular basis
  • Fleets - a number of vehicles operating together or under the same ownership
  • Disrupt - interrupt (an event, activity, or process) by causing a disturbance or problem
  • Moribund - not ​active or ​successful
  • Commuter - a person who travels some distance to work on a regular basis
  • Predetermined - to ​decide or ​arrange something at an ​earlier ​time
