Hindu Editorial Topic 1 :  "Ending impunity: on Hashimpura massacre"

  • Impunity - freedom from any risk of being punished for doing something wrong or bad
  • Massacre - the action of killing of a lot of people
  • Retrieve - to get something back, especially something that is not easy to find
  • Convict - to prove in a court of law that someone is guilty of a crime
  • Conviction - a decision by a court of law that someone is guilty of a crime
  • Personnel - the people who work for a company or organization, or who are members of a military force
  • Provincial - of or relating to the parts of a country outside the capital or the large cities
  • Armed - involving the use of weapons
  • Constabulary - the police of a particular place
  • Instance - an example of something happening
  • Accountability - a situation in which people know who is responsible for something and can ask them to explain its state or quality
  • Sentencing - the system for punishing people who have been found guilty in a court of law
  • Seemingly - in a way that appears to have a particular quality, even though this is probably not true
  • Perfunctory - done without much effort or interest
  • Abduct - to take someone away from their home, family etc using force
  • Canal - an artificial river
  • Communal - relating to a particular community
  • Rifle - a large gun with a long barrel that you hold against your shoulder to fire
  • Rioter - one of a group of people who meet in a public place and behave in a noisy, violent, and uncontrolled way, often as a protest
  • Establish - to discover, prove, or decide that something is true
  • Charge sheet - an official record in which the police write down the names of people they have accused of a crime
  • Battalion - a large group of soldiers that consists of three or more smaller groups called companies
  • Prosecution - the process or act of accusing someone of a crime and asking a court of law to judge them
  • Backed - supported
  • Testimony - a formal statement about something that you saw, know, or experienced, usually given in a court of law
  • Survive - to continue to exist, especially in a difficult or dangerous situation
  • Waterbody - a sea or a reservoir
  • Acquit - to state officially that someone is not guilty of the crime they were accused of
  • Accused - a specific person that is accused of a crime in a court of law
  • Evidence - facts or physical signs that help to prove something
  • En masse - all together as a group
  • Acquittal - an official judgment in a court of law that someone is not guilty of the crime they were accused of
  • Travesty - a situation, action, or event that shocks you because it is very different from what it should be or because it seems very unfair
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Nail - to catch someone, especially when they are doing something wrong, or to make it clear that they are guilty
  • Weed out - to remove a person or thing that is not suitable or good enough, especially from a group or collection
  • Not content with - used to say that someone is not satisfied with something which most people would consider to be enough or too much, but wants or does more
  • Merely - only / just
  • Plea - a statement that someone makes in a court of law to say whether they are guilty of a crime or not
  • Pinpoint - to discover or explain exactly what something is
  • Occupant - someone who uses a room, building, area of land, seat, bed, vehicle or other place during a period of time
  • Culpability - responsibility for doing something bad or illegal
  • Custodial - relating to putting or keeping someone in prison
  • Unconscionable - more than a reasonable or acceptable level or amount
  • Habituated - very familiar with something as a result of experiencing it regularly
  • Reassurance - the act of making someone feel less worried about something
  • Prejudice - an unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially the feeling of not liking a particular group of people

  • Divisive - likely to cause arguments between people

  • Anxiety - a worried feeling you have because you think something bad might happen
  • Runoff - a second election or competition that is organized when the first one does not have a winner
  • Left-of-centre - used to describe a political belief that contains some socialist ideas but is not extreme
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Evoke - to bring a particular emotion, idea, or memory into your mind
  • Mismanagement - the process of managing something badly
  • Crack down - to start dealing with someone or something much more strictly
  • Resonate - to produce an emotional effect on someone
  • Regressive - relating to behaviour that is not responsible or controlled, or is like that of a child
  • Outburst - a sudden spoken expression of a strong feeling, especially anger
  • Polarise - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other, or to cause this to happen
  • Denigrate - to criticize something in a way that shows you think it has no value at all
  • Minority - a small number of people or things that are part of a larger group but different in some way from most of the group
  • Pollster - a person or organization that prepares a poll
  • Pundit - someone who is an expert in a subject, and is often asked to talk to the public about that subject
  • Baffle - if a problem, someone’s behaviour etc baffles you, you cannot understand it or solve it
  • Professed - admitting publicly that you have a particular feeling or belief
  • Dictatorship - government by someone who takes power by force and does not allow elections
  • Soar - to quickly increase to a high level
  • Meteoric - becoming very successful very quickly
  • Comprehend - to understand something
  • Outcome - the final result of a process, meeting, activity etc
  • Legacy - something such as a tradition or problem that exists as a result of something that happened in the past
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Alleviate - to make something less painful, severe, or serious
  • Descend - to go or come down
  • Recession - a period when trade and industry are not successful and there is a lot of unemployment
  • Far-reaching - affecting a lot of people or things in an important way
  • Scandal - a situation in which important people behave in a dishonest or immoral way that shocks people
  • Toppling - to make someone in authority lose their power
  • Elite - a small group of people who have a lot of advantages and keep the most power and influence
  • Culminate - to happen or exist as the final result of a process or situation
  • Controversial - a controversial subject, opinion, or decision is one that people disagree about or do not approve of
  • Impeachment - to formally accuse a public official of a serious crime relating to their job
  • Money-laundering - to hide the origin of money obtained from illegal activities by putting it into legal businesses
  • Succour - to help someone
  • Vulnerable - a thing, person, or place that is vulnerable is easy to attack
  • Backlash - a strong, negative, and often angry reaction to something that has happened, especially a political or social change
  • Extensive - very large in amount or degree
  • Exploit - to treat someone unfairly in order to get some benefit for yourself
  • Disdain - the feeling that someone or something is not important and does not deserve any respect
  • Accord - a formal agreement between countries or groups
  • Intact - not harmed, damaged, or lacking any parts as a result of something that has happened
