1. India’s largest and tallest tricolour hoisted at Ranchi

India’s largest and tallest tricolour hoisted at Ranchi
1. India’s largest tricolour was hoisted atop the tallest pole at Pahari Mandir in Ranchi,  by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. This flag will remain hoisted for 24 hours and shall be illuminated with the help of twenty sodium vapour lights at night. It is world’s largest and the highest hoisted Indian flag.
2.  It measures 66 feet in height and 99 feet in width in the proper ratio 2:3. It was hoisted on pole with height of 293 feet. It weighs 80 kg.

2. TranServ launches India’s first social mobile wallet Udio
1. India’s digital payment startup company TranServ has launched country’s first Social Mobile Wallet named Udio. The digital wallet seeks to address the gap between real and virtual modes of payment as it has more social experience.
2. It integrates a social, community-driven aspect with anytime, anywhere accessibility to digital P2P (peer-to-peer) transactions. 3. These transactions take place via seamless and secure payment structure that creates a ubiquitous ecosystem for both consumers and brands. It is relatively easy to use and is a more casual approach for making cashless payments similar to mobile banking.

3. Eminent Tabla player Shankar Ghosh passed away
1. Eminent Tabla player Pandit Shankar Ghosh passed away  in Kolkata following a prolonged illness. He was 80.
2. He is survived by his wife Sanjukta Ghosh, a classical vocalist of Patiala gharana, a son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons

4. India Submitted first Biennial Update Report to UNFCCC

1. India submitted its first Biennial Update Report (BUR) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
2. The report was submitted towards fulfilment of the reporting obligation under the Convention. As per the provisions of the Convention, countries need to periodically provide information in the form of their National Communication.
3. Highlights of the Biennial Update Report (BUR)
• BUR contains national GHG inventory of India for the year 2010, prepared in accordance with the guidelines of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
• The inventory covers six greenhouse gases- Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6).
• The inventory contains five categories namely- energy, industrial processes and product use (IPPU), agriculture, waste and Land-use, Land-use, Change and Forestry (LULUCF).
• As per BUR, India emitted 2136.84 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gases in 2010.
• Energy sector was the prime contributor to emissions and with 71 percent of total emissions in 2010.
• Industrial processes and product use contributed 8 percent; agriculture and waste sectors contributed 18 percent and 3 percent respectively to the national GHG inventory.
• About 12 percent of emissions were offset by carbon sink action of forests and croplands, considering which the national GHG emissions are arrived at a total of 1884.31 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
• India’s per capita GHG emission in 2010 was 1.56 tCO2 equivalent, which is less than one- third of the world’s per capita emissions and far below than many developed and developing countries.
• A reduction of emission intensity of GDP by about 12 percent between 2005 and 2010 has been achieved against our voluntary pledge to reduce the emission intensity of its GDP by 20–25 percent by 2020.
• At the national level, 137 and at state level 286 policies and measures relevant to climate change have been mapped in the report on non-exhaustive basis.

5. AP Government launched Giriputrika Kalyana Pathakam Scheme for tribal people
1. The Andhra Pradesh Government on 22 January 2016 launched Giriputrika Kalyana Pathakam Scheme to support the tribal women in their quest for livelihood.
2. The scheme was launched by Andhra Pradesh Minister for Social Welfare Ravela Kishore Babu.
3. Highlights of the scheme
• The scheme seeks to reduce rampant infant mortality and child marriages among tribal people.
• It is designed to provide a onetime financial assistance of 50000 rupees to each tribal woman who gets married.
• The amount will be directly disbursed to the bank accounts of the beneficiary through District Tribal Welfare Office.
• To avail the benefits of this scheme, each beneficiary would have to fulfil some mandatory conditions like submission of marriage certificate, income certificate, etc.
• The scheme is envisaged to provide nutritional food to infants till the age of seven years.

6. Sindhu clinches Malaysian Grand Prix Gold title
 1. Two-time World Championship bronze-medallist, India’s P V Sindhu made a rousing start to the new season as she clinched the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold title after defeating Scotland’s Kristy Gilmour in straight games in the final.
2. The Third seeded Indian had lost to Gilmour in 2013 French Open in their only meeting but today she showed why she is considered to be one of India’s most revered women’s singles shuttler as she avenged her loss with a dominating 21-15 21-9 win in a 32-minute clash to clinch her fifth Grand Prix Gold title.
3. This is her second Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold title, having won it in 2013 as well. She also completed a hat-trick at the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold in November last year.
4. Sindhu, who had an unbeaten streak at the Premier Badminton League (PBL), produced a dominating performance as she showed better court coverage and cut down on her errors to outclass her opponent in the summit clash.
