International Current Affairs
  • Today (5th May) is International Midwives Day.
    • This internationally recognised day is observed by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) to highlight the work of midwives.
    • ICM established the idea of the 'International Day of the Midwife' following suggestions and discussion among Midwives Associations in the late 1980s, then launched the initiative formally in 1992.
    • Theme of International Day of the Midwife 2020 : "Midwives with women: celebrate, demonstrate, mobilise, unite – our time is NOW!"
    • Note : Meaning of Midwife = a nurse whose job is to look after women when they are giving birth to a baby
National Current Affairs
  • Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan today chaired the 14th high-level Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting in New Delhi.
    • The GoM reviewed, monitored and evaluated the evolving situation on COVID-19.
    • A presentation on the ground level situation as well as the latest statistics with respect to coronavirus was also made during the meeting.
  • African Swine Fever has been reported in India in Assam where the disease has killed around 2,500 pigs across 306 villages.
    • It is the 1st instance of the disease in our country.
    • This contagious viral disease is not a risk to human health. 
  • As many as 83 new coronavirus deaths and 2,573 cases were reported in India in the last 24 hours. 
    • The total number of coronavirus cases in the country has risen to 42,836, while the death toll has surged to 1,389. 
    • The recovery rate in India stands at 27.45% as 11,762 people have been recovered, discharged or migrated.
  • Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank today announced that JEE Main exam will be held on July 18, 20, 21, 22 and 23 while medical entrance test NEET will be conducted on July 26. 
    • JEE Advanced will be held in August, the date for which will be announced later.
  • Government has notified new sets of specified health warnings for all tobacco product packs
    • The new set of health warnings will be applicable w.e.f. September 1, 2020. 
    • They comprise two images, of which the first image will be valid for twelve months following commencement and the second image will come into effect following the end of twelve months.
  • The Civil Aviation Ministry and DGCA have launched the GARUD (Government Authorisation for Relief Using Drones) portal  for providing fast track conditional exemptions to government agencies for COVID-19 related drone operations.
    • The step has been taken to aid government entities in addressing the challenges posed by COVID-19 and will remain in force until further orders.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India's coronavirus lockdown forced 12.2 crore people out of jobs last month, according to estimates from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE)
    • The unemployment rate increased to 27.1% in the week ended May 3, the private sector think tank said. 
    • Daily wage workers and those employed by small businesses were the worst-affected, according to CMIE.
  • India's Gold imports plunged 99.95% in April to their lowest in nearly three decades
    • The country reportedly imported around 50 kilograms of gold in April, down from 110.18 tonnes a year ago. 
  • Taking advantage of low oil prices, India has stockpiled 32 million tonnes of oil, said Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan
    • After completely filling the 25-million tonnes of oil storage capacity at refineries and pipelines, refiners are now storing seven million tonnes in tankers at the sea. 
    • India, the world's third-biggest oil importer, buys 80% of its oil requirements from overseas markets.
New Appointments
  • Indian e-commerce company, Flipkart has appointed Sriram Venkataraman as Chief Financial Officer for Flipkart Commerce. 
    • Venkataraman will be responsible for key finance operations and functions at Flipkart and Myntra, including tax, risk management and treasury. 
  • Jammu and Kashmir Government today appointed former Chief Secretary, of J&K, B R Sharma as Chairman Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Commission (PSC).
    • He shall hold the position of the Chairman, Public Service Commission, till he attains the age of sixty-two years.
People in News
  • US President Donald Trump has nominated the following Indian-Americans for various posts in US :
    • Saritha Komatireddy as the Judge of the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York. 
    • Ashok Michael Pinto as a representative to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). 
    • Manisha Singh as his envoy to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)
Awards & Honors
  • The winners of the Pulitzer Prize for 2020 have been announced.
    • 3 Indian photographers Channi Anand, Mukhtar Khan and Dar Yasin of The Associated Press jointly won the prize in Feature Photography category for their coverage of Jammu and Kashmir lockdown after Article 370 was revoked. 
    • American novelist Colson Whitehead has won the Prize in Fiction category for his book titled "The Nickel Boys". With this, he became only the 4th writer ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction twice. 
      • Earlier, he won the prestegious prize in the year 2017 for his book 'Underground Railroad'.
