National Current Affairs
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an order, extending the lockdown for a further period of 2 weeks beyond May 4. 
    • Earlier today, the ministry had issued new guidelines to regulate different activities in this period based on Red, Green and Orange zones.
    • What activities will be allowed in red zones ?
      • Shops selling essential goods in markets and market complexes can remain open outside containment areas in red zones. 
      • All essential and non-essential standalone shops and neighbourhood shops can remain open. 
      • E-commerce activities will be permitted for essential goods. 
      • Private offices can operate with up to 33% strength. 
      • Movement of individuals and vehicles will be allowed for permitted activities.
    • What activities will remain prohibited ?
      • Travel by air, rail, metro and inter-state movement by road, running of schools, colleges and other institutions will remain prohibited throughout India during extended lockdown irrespective of zones. 
      • Hospitality services, including hotels and restaurants, cinema halls, malls, gyms, sports complexes will also remain closed. 
      • All non-essential movement to also remain prohibited between 7 pm to 7 am.
  • India has reported 71 coronavirus deaths and 2,411 new cases in the last 24 hours.
    • The total number of cases has risen to 37,776, while the death toll has surged to 1,223. 
    • Further, as many as 10,018 coronavirus patients have been cured, discharged or migrated in India so far.
  • The Railways today announced that its passenger train services will remain suspended till May 17, in view of extension of lockdown to control coronavirus spread. 
    • However, movement of migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and others stranded at different places shall be carried out by 'Shramik' special trains. 
    • Freight and parcel train operations will also continue.
  • Nation celebrates birth centenary of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray today. 
    • Ray was born on this day in 1921 . 
    • Important Points to Note :
      • He directed 36 films in his lifetime.
      • Pather Panchali directed by him acclaimed International appreciations.
      • Ray got prestegious Oscar award in 1991 besides he was recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke , Bharat Ratna and many other international awards.
      • Apur Sansar, Satranj ke Khilari , Jana Aranya , Seemabadha , Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen films directed by Ray will be remembered for long time.
    • France Government conferred him the country's highest civilian award Logion of Honour  for his outstanding contributions in the field of film at a function in Kolkata.
    • Ray died in April 1992 .
Science & Technology
  • A new high-pressure ventilator developed by NASA engineers, specifically to treat COVID-19 patients, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use. 
    • NASA said it has decided to license the ventilator design to manufacturers for free until the pandemic lasts.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Traders' body CAIT (Confederation of All India Traders) unveiled its nationwide e-commerce platform, bharatemarket, to be launched next month for local stores. 
    • The platform would "digitise 70 million offline traders of India to offer the best to India's consumers". 
    • It will be built on a geo-tagging feature which will allow customers to place orders from the nearest store of their choice.
New Appointments
  • Hotel startup OYO has appointed former Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Troy Alstead as an independent member of the board of directors. 
    • He will be playing a supervisory role and provide guidance to OYO Founder Ritesh Agarwal and the management. 
Deaths
  • Mexican protest singer Oscar Chávez (85), passed away today from coronavirus-related pneumonia. 
    • Chávez was known for folk-style songs satirising Mexico's corrupt political elite and in his career spanning four decades, he also produced and acted in several plays, films and telenovelas.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The 2021 Badminton World Championships has been postponed from August to November to avoid a clash with the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics
    • The tournament is now scheduled to be held from November 29 to December 5. 
    • Important Note : It'll be the 1st time when the World Championships will be held in the year of the Olympic Games.
  • The Commonwealth Games Federation today announced the rescheduling of the 2021 Commonwealth Youth Games to avoid clash with the Tokyo Olympics, which has been pushed back by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. 
    • The youth games were scheduled to take place from August 1 to 7, 2021 in Trinidad and Tobago.
    • They will now be held in 2023.
  • Colin Graves, the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), has decided to step down from the post after the new 100-ball tournament, The Hundred, was postponed over the coronavirus pandemic. 
    • Graves was set to serve an extension of six months as the chairman to oversee the tournament. 
    • Important Note : Graves will be replaced by Ian Watmore.
