- Today (28th April) is Workers' Memorial Day / World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

- This is an international day of remembrance and action for workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work.
- Theme of Workers' Memorial Day 2020 : “Stop the Pandemic at Work”
- The US, China and India were the world's 3 biggest military spenders in 2019, arms watchdog Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) announced today.

- India's defence expenditure rose by 6.8% to $71.1 billion.
- The total number of Coronavirus cases in India has surged to 29,974.

- Meanwhile, the death toll has risen to 937, with the fatality rate being 3.12%.
- As many as 7,027 coronavirus patients have been cured, discharged or migrated in India so far, taking the recovery rate to 23.44%.
- The doubling rate of cases in India is currently 10.2 days.
- Health Ministry's Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal today said that plasma therapy is still in experiment stage, adding that there's no evidence it can be used as treatment for coronavirus.

- He added that its usage is illegal and can be life threatening for the patient.
- He further reiterated that no one should use the therapy till it is approved by ICMR.
- Rajasthan High Court has ordered that a person's caste shouldn't be mentioned in any judicial or administrative matter as it was "against the Constitution" and contrary to a 2018 direction of the court.

- The order read, "It is enjoined upon all concerned to ensure that caste of any person including accused is not incorporated in any judicial or administrative matter."
- Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y. S.Jaganmohan Reddy has launched the “Jagananna Vidya Deevena” Scheme today at Tedepalli, in Guntur District in AP.

- Under this scheme, fee reimbursement will be credited directly to mothers’ accounts instead of college accouts in the coming academic year 2020-21.
- Through this Jagananna Vidya Deevena Scheme, the AP State Government is going to provide Fee Reimbursement for ITI, B.Tech, B. Pharmacy, MBA, MCA, and B.Ed Courses.
- An amount of INR 15,000 To 20,000 will be offered for the eligible candidates through the Jagananna Vidya Deevena Scheme.
- Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched Jeevan Amrit Yojana, a unique scheme to boost immunity system of citizens of the state.

- Under this scheme, the State Government will distribute packet of special Trikut Churna prepared by the AYUSH Department free of cost to the citizens.
- Under Jeevan Amrit yojna, packets of 50 grams each of the kadha have been prepared by Madhya Pradesh Laghu Vanopaj Sangh in collaboration with the Department of AYUSH.
- This kadha made of peepal, ginger and black pepper is being distributed free of cost to one crore people in rural and urban areas of the state.
- Outstanding loans amounting to Rs 68,607 crore of top 50 wilful bank loan defaulters in India including firms of Mehul Choksi and Vijay Mallya have been technically written off till September 30, 2019, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a RTI reply.

- Absconding dimantaire Choksi's company Gitanjali Gems tops the list of these defaulters with a whopping amount of Rs 5,492 crore, according to the list.
- Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $1.5-billion loan to India to help fund its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

- It includes support for immediate priorities such as disease containment and prevention, as well as social protection for the poor and economically vulnerable sections of the society.
- Private lender Axis Bank has agreed to acquire an additional 29% stake in Max Life Insurance, which will take its total stake in the country's fourth-largest private insurer to 30%.
- US President Donald Trump nominated Indian-American diplomat Manisha Singh as the country's next envoy to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
