Human Development Index 2019: Summary

About the Index

  • Human development index (HDI) is an index that is used to rank countries based on human development. It is used to measure a country's overall achievement in its social and economic dimensions of a country.
  • It is scored using three indicators- Life expectancy, education and per capital income and education. Education comprised- Mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling.
  • This Index is a tool used to follow changes in development levels over time and to compare the development levels of different countries.
  • The Human Development Index is published by UNDP.( United Nations development program).

Global Findings of the Human development Index

  • The HDI (Human Development Index) has enabled innovative thinking about progress by capturing the simple yet powerful idea that development is about much more than income.
  • Over the years the Human development Report (HDR) has introduced new measures to evaluate progress in reducing poverty and empowering women.
  • Global population increased from 5 billion to 7.5 billion between 1990 and 2017, the number of people in low and development fell from 3 billion to 926 million- or from 60 percent of global population to 12 percent- and that number of people in high from 1.2 billion to 3.8 billion- or from 24 percent of global population to 51 percent.
  • Human development denotes both the process of widening people’s choices and improving their well – being.

India's performance in Human Development Index( HDI)

  • India's rank one position up from last Ranking and rank 129th out of 189 countries on the 2019 Human Development Index released by UNDP.
  • Inequality and deprivation continue to be high in the country.
  • India remains the home of 364 million poor people (28 percent) out of a global population of the 1.3 billion.
