International Current Affairs
  • 8th November 2019 was observed as World Usability Day.
    • This day was established in the year 2005 by the Usability Professionals Association, (now the User Experience Professionals Association).
    • Aim of World Usability Day :  to promote the values of usability, usability engineering, user-centered design, universal usability, and every user's responsibility to ask for things that work better.
    • Theme of World Usability Day 2019“Design for the Future We Want”.
  • 6th November 2019 was observed as International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.
    • This day was established on 5th November 2001 by the United Nations General Assembly, during Kofi Atta Annan's tenure as Secretary-General.
    • Aim of this day : To educate people about the damaging effects of war and armed conflict on the environment.
  • 5th November 2019 was observed as the World Tsunami Awareness Day.
    • Aim of this Day : to spread awareness among people across the world about Tsunami. 
    • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had constituted the day by adopting a resolution in December 2015. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a 2-day visit to Brazil from the 13th of this month.
    • During this visit, he will attend the 11th BRICS Summit in Brasilia. 
    • This will be the sixth time that Mr Modi participates in the BRICS Summit. His 1st BRICS Summit was at Fortaleza in Brazil in 2014. 
    • Important Note : Theme of 11th BRICS Summit  : "Economic Growth for an Innovative Future”.
  • India in 2020 will host the next edition of 'No Money for Terror' Ministerial Conference on Terrorism- Financing
    • The conference is a group of countries that focuses on countering terror financing.
  • New Zealand has passed a "zero carbon" bill that aims to reduce the country's carbon emissions to zero by 2050 and meet its commitment under the Paris climate agreement. 
  • US President Donald Trump administration has filed paperwork with the United Nations (UN) to withdraw the United States (US) from the Paris climate agreement
    • President Trump in 2017, while announcing the US' withdrawal, had said the climate accord would negatively impact the US economy and kill jobs. 
  • PM Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Kartarpur Corridor.
    • This will allow pilgrims to travel to Gurudwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan
    • Modi flagged off the procession of around 500 pilgrims, which also includes ex-PM Manmohan Singh, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh and actor-politician Sunny Deol. 
National Current Affairs
  • 9th November is National Legal Services Day.
    • This day was first started by the Supreme Court in the year 1995 all across the India to offer help and support to the weaker and poor group of sections of people (women, disabled persons, Scheduled Tribes, children, Scheduled Castes, human trafficking victims as well as natural calamities victims).

  • Pronouncing the verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit, the Supreme Court ordered that the disputed land must be given to Hindus for the construction of temple and alternate land must be given to Muslims. 
    • Adding the Ayodhya site is one composite site, the court said, "Land measuring 5 acre shall be given to Sunni Waqf Board."
    • While reading out the verdict in the Ayodhya title suit case, the Supreme Court said that Babri Masjid was not constructed on vacant land.  
    • The Supreme Court has also said that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has not established whether a temple was demolished to build Babri Masjid. 
      • The court, however, said that the fact that there was a temple beneath the destroyed structure has been established by the ASI.  
      • While pronouncing the verdict, the court also said that Allahabad High Court was wrong in dividing the disputed site into three parts in its 2010 ruling. 
      • Today's verdict coincides with the foundation laying ('shilanyas') ceremony performed on November 9, 1989 by the RSS and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders. 
      • The 5-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court, which pronounced the verdict is headed by Ranjan Gogoi (Chief Justice of India). 
      • The bench also includes :

        • Justice Ashok Bhushan

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has inaugurated the 10th Asian Conference of Emergency Medicine in New Delhi. 
  • The 7th edition of the 'North East Festival', that aims to raise awareness about the people, resources and culture of the country's northeast region, is being hosted in New Delhi from November 8-10. 
    • The event will witness music and folk dance performances, handicraft exhibitions, various cuisine stalls, handloom fashion shows and art exhibits. 
  • Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government has banned all the state-owned vehicles which are over 15 years old across the state to fight the rising pollution levels. 
  • The annual white desert carnival of 'Rann Utsav', held by Gujarat Tourism Department in the country's largest salt desert 'Great Rann of Kutch', began from October 28 and will last till February 23. 
    • Visited by lakhs of people each year, it celebrates cultural and artistic heritage of Kutch. 
    • The activities include folk dance performances, handicraft shopping, star gazing and sightseeing.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah will preside over the concluding session of Global Investors' Meet, in Dharmshala today.
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the meet yesterday, organised by the Himachal Pradesh government to attract investment and create employment opportunities in the state.
    • Over 1,700 business delegates, including 200 International delegates are participating in the Global Investors' Meet with UAE as the partner Country.        
  • In a move to give impetus to the export of Khadi, the government has allocated a separate Harmonized System (HS) code for this fabric.
    • Allocation of HS code to the khadi will help the government to plan the export strategies effectively. 
  • The 11th edition of Bal Sangam to be organised by the National School of Drama (NSD) began today (9th November) in the New Delhi.
    • It is a confluence of folk and traditional art forms performed by children. 
    • The 4-day festival will showcase enthralling folk and traditional performing arts and folk theatre dedicated to children.
  • The 25th Kolkata International Film Festival begins today. 
    • Bollywood Actor Amitabh Bachchan inaugurated the 8 day long festival at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata in presence of Sahrukh Khan, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and a galaxy of cine stars.
    • Note : Germany is the focus country of this year’s festival.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India opted out of the RCEP trade agreement.
    • The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is a trade deal that proposed to create an "integrated market" spanning across 16 countries, 10 ASEAN members and 6 countries with which the ASEAN bloc has free trade agreements. 
    • RCEP would make it easier for products and services of the signatory countries to be available across the region. India opted out of the agreement.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its amended compensation guidelines for private bank heads, has mandated at least 50% of compensation for CEOs to be variable and linked to their performance, starting April 1. 
    • It said employees were often rewarded for boosting short-term profit without proper recognition of the risks and long-term consequences of their moves, which can threaten the financial system.
  • The RBI enhanced the withdrawal limit for Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank customers to ₹50,000, inclusive of the ₹40,000 allowed earlier.
    • With this, more than 78% of the depositors of the bank will be able to withdraw their entire account balance. 
    • Depositors have also been allowed to withdraw from the bank's own ATMs within the prescribed limit.
  • The Cabinet has approved setting up of ₹25,000 crore fund with LIC and SBI's participation for stalled affordable and middle-income housing projects
    • Sovereign wealth funds and pension funds have shown interest and may join the fund in the future, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. 
    • Funding will also be made available to projects that have been classified as non-performing assets.
  • The Reserve Bank has imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on prepaid payment instrument Oxigen Services.
    • The move was taken in exercise of powers vested under Section 30 of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, for non-compliance of regulatory guidelines.
    • Oxigen Services facilitates payment processing and money transfer services.
Science & Technology
  • Canadian small-satellite startup Kepler has achieved the world's first successful satellite-based broadband connectivity with a speed of over 100 Mbps to the Arctic
    • Kepler's nanosatellites transmitted the internet to a German icebreaker sea vessel that acts as a mobile lab for the MOSAiC research expedition in the Arctic. 
    • Kepler has demonstrated 38 Mbps download and 120 Mbps upload speeds.
  • European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), which tracks global temperatures, revealed that October 2019 was the hottest October ever recorded on Earth
    • 2019 also witnessed the hottest-ever September, June and July and the second-hottest August. 
Awards & Honors
  • Sara Damnjanovic (Serbia) was crowned 'Miss Asia Global 2019' at the international beauty contest held in Kerala. 
    • Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Yen Trang was crowned 'Miss Asia'.
    • Samiksha Singh from India won the sub-title of 'Miss Beautiful Face'. 
    • Note : Asia Global is one of the 3 beauty pageant contests in India which doesn't have a bikini and other similar rounds.
  • Italian movie ‘Despite the Fog’ will be the opening at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) this year. 
    • The film is directed by Europe’s noted filmmaker Goran Paskaljevic.
    • The 50th edition of IFFI, beginning 20th of this month in GOA, will witness the screening of over 200 best films from 76 countries.
  • The 9th edition of the Dhaka Lit-fest started today with a galaxy of writers and book lovers thronging the venue ground at the Bangla Academy.
    • Over the three day of the festival 200 speakers, performers and thinkers, will take part in discussions on diverse topics.
    • The special focus of this year's lit-fest is on Indigenous Languages as the UNESCO has marked 2019 as the year of Indigenous Language Protection.
    • Important Note : On the first day of the event, West Bengal-based writer Abhisek Sarkar and Bangladeshi poet Rofiquzzaman Rony were given the Gemcon Young Literature Award and Gemcon Young Poetry Award.
    • Abhisek and Rofiquzzaman won the awards for their manus, "Nishiddho" and "Dhoashar Tamate Rong," respectively.
Books & Authors
  • To mark 200 years of Indian English poetry, India's National Academy of Letters, Sahitya Akademi has published an anthology called 'Modern English Poetry by Younger Indians'. 
    • The book contains pieces of poetry by poets aged 40 or less. 
    • This book has been edited by poet Sudeep Sen.
New Appointments
  • Satya Pal Malik sworn in as the new Governor of Goa
    • Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Pradeep Nandrajog administered the oath of office to
    • Note : Malik was the Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir before its bifurcation into Union Territories.
  • Justice AK Mittal sworn in as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court
    • He was earlier Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • India have been named as the host country for 2023 Men's hockey World Cup.
    • This is the 2nd consecutive time that India will be hosting the World Cup. 
    • India will also become the 1st country to host the men's hockey World Cup 4 times. 
    • Note : The worldcup is scheduled to be held from January 13 to January 29.
  • Stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma became the 1st Indian man and second in world cricket to complete 100 T-20 Internationals.
    • He reached the milestone when he led the team in the second match against Bangladesh at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium. 
    • Note : Shoaib Malik (Pakistan) with 111 games is the only player to have played more than 100 T20 Internationals.
  • Opener Smriti Mandhana became the 2nd fastest Indian to score 2,000 runs in ODI cricket.
    • The 23-year-old reached the landmark in her 51st innings, second only to Shikhar Dhawan (48 innings). 
    • Note : Mandhana is the 3rd-fastest player in women's cricket to achieve the milestone.
  • Cricket Australia has appointed former cricketer Melanie Jones as its New director
    • Jones, who debuted for Australia in 1997 and played five Test matches and 61 ODIs, has been recognised with one of the country's highest honours, the Medal of the Order of Australia. 
  • India's Lakshya Sen has won the SaarLorLux Open badminton tournament at Saarbrücken in Germany. 
    • He defeated Sen Weng Hong Yang of China in an exciting final last night.
  • World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic defeated Canada's Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to lift his 5th Paris Masters title. 
  • Australian tennis world number one Ashleigh Barty defeated Elina Svitolina of Ukraine to win the WTA Finals in China and claim a record-breaking $4.42 million in prize money, the biggest ever prize money amount won in men's or women's tennis
