Global Hunger Index 2019- Summary
  • The Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2019 is an annual index on hunger that has been released by Irish aid agency Concern in partnership with Welthungerhilfe. The 2019 edition is the 14th annual edition of GHI.
  • Global Hunger Index 2019 is a tool that is used to measure hunger global, regional and national levels. The index ranks countries on the basis of scores calculated on the scale of 0 to 100, where 0 means no hunger and 100 means worst condition in terms of Hunger.
  • The scores under the index are calculated on the basis of a formula that captures three dimensions of hunger—insufficient caloric intake, child under nutrition, and child mortality—using four component indicators-
    1. Undernourishment: the share of the population that is undernourished. 
    2. Child Wasting: the share of children under the age of five who are wasted.
    3. Child Stunting: the share of children under the age of five who are stunted.
    4. Child Mortality: the mortality rate of children under the age of five.
  • 117 countries have been evaluated in the Global Hunger Index 2019. 

Global Findings-

  • According to Global Hunger Index 2019, the level of hunger and under nutrition worldwide falls under moderate and serious categories at a value of 20.0.
  • According to index, an additional US$70 billion beyond current budget expectations is needed over 10 years to achieve the global targets.
  • At the present speed, around 45 countries will fail even to reach low hunger by 2030.
  • Region wise, South Asia and Africa South of the Sahara have the highest 2019 GHI scores in the world, at 29.3 and 28.4, respectively.
  • Belarus is on the top position on the index. However first 17 countries on the index have a score less than 5.
  • Four countries-Chad, Madagascar, Yemen, and Zambia have alarming levels of hunger and are ranked low in the index.
  • Central African Republic has been ranked last in the list of 117 countries with a score of 53.6. The level of hunger is extremely alarming for the country.

India Specific Findings-

  • India has been ranked 102nd out of 117 countries in the index.
  • India has a score of 30.3 and is suffering from serious level of hunger.
  • Child wasting rate of India is extremely high at 20.8 percent and is the highest of any country in this report. 
  • India's child stunting rate at 37.9 percent is also very high in terms of public health significance.
  • India was ranked 103rd in 119 countries in 2018.
  • India’s rank on the index has drastically changed from 55 (Out of 76 countries) in 2014 to 102 in 119.

Quick Facts-

  • Global Hunger Index was first started in the year 2016. It was initially published by the US based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
  • Irish Publisher Concern Worldwide joined IFPRI as a co-producer in 2007.
  • In 2018, German Welthungerhilfe joined GHI and IFPRI left it. So, from 2018, GHI is being published by Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide.
