Eat Right India Movement: Food Safety Mitra Scheme

  • Implemented by: Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)

Purpose:

  • To create new employment opportunities for youth, particularly with food and nutrition background.
  • Support small and medium scale food business houses to follow the laws on food safety.
  • Sensitize street food vendors on hygiene aspects and assist businessmen to comply with standards and facilitate licensing and registration.

Key feature:

  • To commemorate World Food Day 2019, Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan launched this scheme. The theme for this day was ‘Healthy Diets for a Zero Hunger World’.
  • On this day the government also launched the ‘Eat Right Jacket’, and ‘Eat Right Jhola’ to strengthen food safety administration.
  • The ‘Eat Right Jhola’ scheme is to promote a reusable cloth bag, which replace plastic bags for grocery shopping in various retail chains. These bags are being provided on rental basis through a private textile rental service company.
  • The ‘Eat Right Jacket’ scheme is to provide a jacket for the field staff. It has a smart design for holding tech devices such as tablets/smartphone, a QR code and RFID tag for identification and tracking.
  • Apart from this, FSSAI joined hands with the Domestic Workers Sector Skill Council (DWSSC), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to launch a training course for domestic workers and homemakers.

The features of the Safety Mitra are in four-fold:

  • Digital Mitra: It will help individuals to apply for licenses or registrations, look into issues of suspended licenses and registrations.
  • Hygiene Mitra: It will conduct various audits at outlets to check all the safety and hygiene standards. It will also responsible for training food safety supervisors and food handlers in safe and hygienic practices.
  • Trainer Mitra: It will help to train food safety supervisors and conduct training at FSSAI certified ‘Eat Right’ campuses. At present, there are about 1.55 lakh trainers and with this scheme, the number will increase at least 10 lakh trainers.
  • Campaign Ambassadors: It is for creating awareness amongst consumers by creating campaigns across social media platforms and other available channels.
