- Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on his 1st visit to the country since assuming the office in May.

- Both ministers discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest.
- Jaishankar also reviewed the preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia next week
- Union Minister of Defence, Rajnath Singh co-chaired the Japan–India Defence Ministerial Meeting with Defence Minister of Japan Takeshi lwaya in Tokyo, Japan.

- The dialogue discussed various issues of mutual concern which includes ways to further strengthen existing bilateral co-operative arrangements and adopt new initiatives towards achieving peace and security in region.
- Saudi Arabia created a new ministry for industry and mineral resources, separating it from the kingdom's energy ministry.

- Investor and industrialist Bandar Alkhorayef will head the new entity which will become independent on January 1.
- Prime Minister Boris Johnson-led UK government has asked the Queen to suspend the Parliament from mid-September until October 13.

- This will effectively reduce the time for MPs to pass laws to prevent a no-deal Brexit.
- The Queen has approved the government's request.
- The suspension comes before Brexit which is scheduled for October 31.
- The 12-day 14th Conference of Parties (COP14) to UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) inaugurated at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

- During the meet, Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Prakash Javadekar expressed that mass awareness and public participation is the need of the hour as be it climate change or desertification, human actions have a role in disturbing balance of nature.
- The Government of Indonesia has announced to move its current capital from Jakarta (on the island of Java) to the sparsely populated East Kalimantan (on Borneo island).
National Current Affairs
- Union Government is celebrating the entire month of September as “Rashtriya Poshan Maah” (National Nutrition Month) to emphasize the need for healthy nutrition.

- This initiative is aimed at sensitising public on healthy eating, addressing twin issues of malnutrition and undernutrition and obesity in some sections and also intensifying existing nationwide campaign for ‘malnutrition-free India‘.
- Theme: ‘Complementary Feeding’
- India celebrates its National Sports Day on August 29 as it marks the birth anniversary of former hockey captain Major Dhyan Chand, who helped India win three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

- Till date, he's the only hockey player to receive Padma Bhushan.
- Important Note : On the ocation of National Sports Day, PM Narendra Modi on Thursday launched 'Fit India Movement'.

- The campaign is aimed at encouraging people to include physical activity and sports in their everyday lives.
- Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that a statue of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will be installed in the state.

- The Chief Minister also said that Jaitley's birth anniversary will be celebrated as a state function every year.
- Union Minister of Health, Harsh Vardhan inaugurated the week-long 72nd session of World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for South-East Asia (SEA) in New Delhi.

- This is the 2nd occasion that India is hosting Regional Committee meeting.
- Note : Last meeting was also hosted by India in New Delhi.
- Indian Health Minister, Harsh Vardhan was unanimously elected as chair of 72nd session.
- Bihar government has issued an order asking employees not to wear informal clothes like jeans and T-shirts to the Secretariat as it's "against the culture and dignity of the office".

- Adding that the attire should be according to the weather and nature of work, it instructed the employees to wear a "proper formal dress" which is "soothing, decent and comfortable".
- A cultural event called ‘Namaste Pacific’ to showcase in India the culture of Pacific countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Fiji was held in New Delhi.

- The event was jointly organized by High Commissions of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji.
- The Delhi Cabinet has approved free rides for women on DTC buses and cluster buses effective from October 29.

- Women can avail free rides using the 'single-journey passes' which will be available with the bus conductors.
- To mark the occasion of PM Narendra Modi's birthday on September 17, the BJP government will be organising 'Seva Saptah' (Service Week) from September 14 to 20.

- The nationwide campaign will include programmes related to social service and cleanliness.
- Tamil Nadu government has banned sex reassignment surgeries on intersex infants and children.

- It cited a WHO report that stated such procedures are medically unnecessary and often irreversible, with lifelong consequences on intersex person's physical and mental health.
- Intersex is used for people born with variations in sex characteristics, that don't fit typical definitions of female or male.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘Garvi Gujarat’, the 2nd state bhawan of the Gujarat government in the national capital New Delhi.
- India’s 1st ‘Garbage Café’ will soon be opened in Ambikapur city in north Chhattisgarh.

- This initiative of Ambikapur municipal corporation aims to make Ambikar city plastic-free.
- In this unique Café, poor people and rag pickers will get free food in exchange for one kilogram of plastic.
- Besides they will also provided with breakfast in return for exchanging half a kilogram of plastic brought to the cafe.
- Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu dedicated India’s longest electrified rail tunnel between Cherlopalli and Rapuru in Andhra Pradesh.
- The 12th India Security Summit was held in New Delhi.

- This summit was organized by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) and is officially supported by Union Ministry of Communications & Information Technology.
- Theme of this edition of summit : “Towards New National Cyber Security Strategy”.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that Punjab National Bank will merge with Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India while Canara Bank will be merged with Syndicate Bank.

- Further, Union Bank of India will be merged with Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank.
- She also announced that Indian Bank will be merged with Allahabad Bank.
- Important Note : India will have 12 state-run banks compared to 27 in 2017 following this announcement to merge ten banks into four.

- Finance Minister also assured that no bank would be closed and no employee will be removed after the merger of public sector banks.
- The Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) Regime between Switzerland and India kicked off from September 1, 2019.

- Under this mechanism, India will start receiving information on all financial accounts held by Indian residents in Switzerland, for the year 2018.
- The Income Tax Department has announced it will automatically generate Permanent Account Number (PAN) for taxpayers without it if they file Income Tax Returns (ITRs) using their Aadhaar number.

- The rule came into effect from September 1.
- The ITR filers will not be required to submit any documents and their demographic information will be obtained from the UIDAI for PAN.
- The government has accepted the resignation of SBI's Managing Director Anshula Kant with effect from August 31 in relaxation of the notice period.

- This comes after her appointment as the MD and Chief Financial Officer of World Bank Group.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has again extended the deadline for prepaid installments, including mobile wallets, to do full KYC of customers till February 29, 2020.

- The extension comes as a relief for operators such as PhonePe, Paytm and Amazon Pay who ran the risk of losing thousands of customers if they failed to comply with the August 31 deadline.
- Aimed at increasing the life of currency notes, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon introduce varnished currency notes of ₹100 denomination on a field trial basis.
- The Cabinet has approved 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in commercial coal mining and allied activities through the automatic route.

- Currently, 100% FDI is allowed for coal and lignite mining for captive consumption by power projects as wells as by iron and steel, and cement units. State-owned Coal India currently accounts for over 80% of India's domestic coal output.
- East-Central African country Uganda relaunched its national carrier, Uganda Airlines, which will initially fly to seven destinations in Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, South Sudan and Burundi.

- Uganda Airlines, founded by the country's former dictator Idi Amin in 1976, was liquidated in 2001.
- China's central bank is going to launch state-backed cryptocurrency by November 11 and issue it to seven institutions.

- The People's Bank of China (PBOC) plans to issue the cryptocurrency, referred to as DC/EP (Digital Currency/Electronic Payment), through multiple Chinese banks.
- PBOC aims to cut the costs of circulating paper money and boost policymakers' control of money supply.
MOUs & Agreements
- The Government portal for public procurement GeM (Government e-Marketplace) has inked MoU with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to boost MSME ecommerce sales.

- The MoU aims to enable promotion of special initiatives of GeM, such as Womaniya and Start-up Runway, with SIDBI stakeholders.
- It also seeks to promote MSMEs, women entrepreneurs, and Self Help Groups (SHGs).
Places in News
- The 182-metre-tall Statue of Unity in Gujarat has been featured in Time magazine's 'World's Greatest Places 2019' list.

- The list comprises 100 "new and newly noteworthy destinations to experience right now". "Excellent news vis-à-vis the Statue of Unity," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, adding that a record 34,000 people visited the site in a single day a few days back.

- The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will honour Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an award for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan during his visit to the US.

- The campaign aims to achieve the vision of a 'Clean India' by October 2, 2019.
- S Aswatha Narayana, an engineering graduate from Odisha, won the Gold medal in Water Technology at WorldSkills Competition at Russia's Kazan, the only gold by any Indian so far.
- Deepa Malik, the 1st Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympics, was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
- The Geographical Indications Registry (GIR) in Chennai has accorded coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Dindigul lock and Kandangi saree from Tamil Nadu.

- This takes total number of such indigenous products that have been accorded GI tag from Tamil Nadu to 31.
- President Ram Nath Kovind on the occasion of National Sports day (on August 29) ceremony presented Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards 2018 to winners at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

- Former India pacer Atul Wassan was named Chairman of the senior selection committee of the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA).
Sports Current Affairs
- Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has became India's most successful captain in Test cricket history.
- Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga has become the highest wicket-taker in T20I cricket.
- Wembley (England) is going to host the UEFA Champions League final in 2023, a year that will mark 100 years since the first opening of the original Wembley stadium.
- The 67th Nehru Trophy boat race, which is being deemed as the biggest water event in Asia was recently held at Alappuzha, Kerala.

- Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was attended the event as the Chief Guest.
- ‘Nadubhagam Chundan’, the snake boat of Pallathuruthy Boat Club, lifted this year's trophy.
