SDG Gender Equality Index 2019: Highlights
  • The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Gender Index 2019 has been developed by Equal Measures 2030. It is a joint endeavour of various regional and global organizations which include African Women's Development and Communication Network, Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and International Women's Health Coalition.
  • The SDG Gender Equality Index 2019 covers 129 countries across the world and includes 51 indicators across 14 of the 17 official Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 17 SDGs include Poverty, Hunger & Nutrition, Health, Education, Gender Equality, Water & Sanitation, Energy, Work & Economic Growth, Industry, Infrastructure & Innovation, Inequality, Cities & Communities, Climate, Peace & Institutions and Partnerships.

    Global Findings-

    • The SDG Gender Equality Index 2019 found that no country among the 129 countries has achieved its target of gender equality for the 2030 agenda.
    • As per the index, the global average score is 65.7 out of 100, which is just passing grade. This score also highlights that nearly 40 per cent of the world’s girls and women – 1.4 billion – live in countries that are failing on gender equality.
    • No country has achieved an excellent overall score of 90 but Denmark tops the index with a score of 89.3. So, Denmark is close to the excellent overall score.
    • Denmark is followed by Finland, Sweden, and Norway in the index.
    • Chad has been placed last in the index and it has a score of 33.4.
    • As per the index, various low-income countries have performed well on indicators that capture women’s physical safety, e.g. Rwanda.
    • Kenya has very high rates of women who use digital banking and Colombia has better coverage of social assistance amongst its poorest people than the United States.

      Regional Performance

      • Asia and the Pacific region is the second lowest performer on the measure of women’s ability to rise to the top ranks of national governments. The region has an average regional index score of 64.6.
      • The Europe and North America region tops the Index and has an average regional index score of 79.1.
      • Latin America and the Caribbean region is the second highest region in the index and has an average regional index score of 66.5.
      • Sub-Saharan Africa region is the lowest region with an average regional index score of 51.1.
      • The Middle East and North Africa region is the second lowest region in the index and has an average regional index score of 60.8.

        India Specific Findings-

        • India has been ranked 95th among 129 countries in the SDG Gender Equality Index 2019.
        • India has an overall score of 56.2.
        • India has the highest goal scores on SDG 3 of health with a score of 79.9; SDG 2 of hunger and nutrition with a score of 76.2 and SDG 7 of energy with a score of 71.8.
        • The lowest goal scores of India are on SDG 17 of partnerships, SDG 9 of industry, infrastructure and innovation and SDG 13 of climate.
        • India is ranked 17th among the 23 countries of the Asia Pacific region covered by the index.
