- QS World University Ranking 2020 has been published by the British education company, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The company annually publishes the rankings of universities across the world. QS World University Ranking is one of the top three university rankings in the world.
- This year’s ranking included 1000 universities. The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) use a methodology to rank the world universities. It uses following indicators for ranking the universities-
- Academic peer review
- Employer reputation
- International staff ratio
- Faculty/Student ratio
- Citations per faculty
- International student ratio
World Ranking-
- According to the QS World University Ranking 2020, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been named as the world's best university. The university has topped the index for a record-breaking eighth successive year.
- MIT is followed by Stanford University and Harvard University on the 2nd and 3rd rank respectively.
- Out of 157 American universities to be ranked this year in the index, 117 universities have seen a decline in their rankings.
- Similarly, 56 out of 87 universities of the UK have seen a decrease in their rankings this year.
- Oxford University continues to be the best University in the UK.
- 9 out of the world’s 50 most international universities are from Australia.

India’s Performance -
- Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is the top Indian institute in QS World University Rankings 2020. It is ranked at 152nd position in the Rankings.
- Three Indian Institutes, IIT Bombay, IIT-Delhi and IISc-Bangalore -- have found a place among the top 200 in the index.
- IIT Delhi and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore are ranked at 182nd and 184th respectively in the ranking.
- India-based OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has become the youngest university to break into top 1,000 in the rankings. It was established in the year 2009.
- IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Madras, IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Roorkee are among the top 400 institutes in the ranking. IIT-Guwahati saw a decline in its ranking from last year and is ranked 491 in the 2020 rankings. It was placed at 472 in last year rankings.
- The Delhi University improved its ranking from last year and is ranked 474 in the 2020 rankings. It was ranked 487 last year.
- Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has emerged as the top-ranked private university in India.
