Henley Passport Index 2019: Highlights
  • Henley Passport Index July 2019 is the ranking of world passports in the July quarter. This index is prepared according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The ranking is based on exclusive data obtained from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). IATA is an association which maintains the world’s largest and most accurate database of travel information, and this data is enhanced by continuous research by the Henley & Partners Research Department.
  • The index covers 199 passports and 227 travel destinations including micro-states and territories.

Key Global Highlights

  • Japan and Singapore have topped the Henley Passport Index in July 2019.
  • Japan and Singapore have replaced Germany from the top position which is held from the beginning of 2018.
  • South Korea, Finland and Germany has been jointly placed on the second position in the index.
  • Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg jointly rank 3rd in the index. They have visa-free access to 186 countries.
  • 4th position is jointly held by France, Spain, Sweden and Austria, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland are on 5th position.
  • The UK and the US are placed 6th in the index with a visa-free or visa-on-arrival score of 183. This is the lowest position both the countries have held since 2010.
  • Afghanistan is placed at the last position in the index.
  • Countries with citizenship-by-investment programs continue to perform strongly on the Index. Malta has moved up by one place to rank 7th on the index with a visa-on-arrival score of 182.
  • Australian passport has been ranked ninth in the index with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 180 countries.
  • The index also highlights that UAE is the biggest climber in the index from 2009 to 2019. UAE has improved by 41 places from 2009 to rank 20 in 2019. UAE was ranked 61 in 2009.
  • The biggest faller in the index is Nigeria. The ranking of Nigeria has decreased by 31 places from 2009 to rank 98 in 2019. Nigeria was ranked 67 in 2009.

    India’s Performance on the Index

    • India has been ranked 86th on the Henley Passport Index July 2019. India shares the position with Mauritania, Sao Tome and Principe.
    • India’s passport has Visa-free access to 58 destinations.
    • India’s passport has dropped from 79th rank to 86th from the previous ranking of Henley Passport Index.

    Quick Fact-

    • Henley Passport Index was started in 2005 as Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index (HVRI) but was modified and renamed in January 2018.
