Directions: (6 –10): In the following questions two equations in x and y are given. You have to solve both the equations and give the answer

Q6. I. 4x² – 9x + 2 = 0
II. 3y² – 7y + 2 = 0
If x > y
If x < y
If x ≥ y or relationship between x and y cannot be established
If x ≤ y
If x = y
Solution:
I. 4x²–9x + 2 = 0
⇒ 4x²– 8x – x + 2 = 0
⇒ 4x (x – 2)– 1(x–2) = 0
⇒ (x–2) (4x – 1) = 0
⇒ x = 2,1/4
II. 3y² – 7y + 2 = 0
⇒ 3y² – 6y – y + 2 = 0
⇒ 3y (y –2) - 1(y –2) = 0
⇒ y = 2, 1/3
No relation

Q7. I. 7y² + 19y – 26 = 0
II. x² – 36x + 288 = 0
If x > y
If x < y
If x ≥ y or relationship between x and y cannot be established
If x ≤ y
If x = y
Solution:
I. 7y² + 19y – 26 = 0
⇒ 7y² +26y – 7y – 26 = 0
⇒ y (7y + 26) - 1(7y + 26) = 0
⇒ y = 1, -26/7
II. x² – 36x + 288 = 0
⇒ x²– 12x – 24x + 288 = 0
⇒ x (x–12) –24 (x–12) = 0
⇒ (x – 12) (x –24) = 0
⇒ x = 12, 24
x > y

Q8. I. 6x² + 13x + 5 = 0
II. 2y² – 8y – 24 = 0
If x > y
If x < y
If x ≥ y or relationship between x and y cannot be established
If x ≤ y
If x = y
Solution:
I. 6x² + 13x +5 = 0
⇒ 6x² + 3x + 10x + 5 = 0
⇒ 3x (2x +1) +5 (2x + 1) = 0
⇒ (2x +1) (3x + 5) = 0
⇒ x = -1/2, -5/3
II. 2y² – 8y – 24 = 0
⇒ y² – 4y – 12 = 0
⇒ y² – 6y + 2y – 12 = 0
⇒ y (y–6) +2(y–6) = 0
⇒ (y – 6) (y + 2) = 0
⇒ y = 6, –2
No relation

Q9. I. 22x² – 27x + 8 = 0
II. 12y² – 48y + 36 = 0
If x > y
If x < y
If x ≥ y or relationship between x and y cannot be established
If x ≤ y
If x = y
Solution:
I. 22x² – 27x + 8 = 0
⇒ 22x² – 11x – 16x + 8 = 0
⇒ 11x (2x–1) –8 (2x–1) = 0
⇒ (2x – 1) (11x –8) = 0
⇒ x = 1/2, 8/11
II. 12y² ¬ 48y + 36 = 0
⇒ y² – 4y + 3 = 0
⇒ y² – 3y – y + 3 = 0
⇒ y (y – 3) –1 (y – 3) = 0
⇒ y = 3, 1
y>x

Q10. I. y² + 42y + 432 = 0
II. x² + 38x + 352 = 0
If x > y
If x < y
If x ≥ y or relationship between x and y cannot be established
If x ≤ y
If x = y
Solution:
I. y² + 42y + 432 = 0
⇒ y² + 18y + 24y + 432 = 0
⇒ y (y + 18) +24 (y +18) = 0
⇒ (y + 18) (y + 24) = 0
⇒ y = –18, –24
II. x² + 38x + 352 = 0
⇒ x² + 16x + 22x + 352 = 0
⇒ x (x + 16) +22 (x +16) = 0
⇒ (x + 16) (x + 22) = 0
⇒ x = –16, –22
