International Current Affairs
- Today (30th April) is International Jazz Day.

- This day is organized by UNESCO to celebrate “the virtues of jazz as an educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people.”
- Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attended the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' conclave held at Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan.

- During the conclave, ways to further boost defence and security cooperation among the member countries in the wake of evolving security challenges in the region were discussed.
- On the sidelines, Ms Sitharaman held bilateral meetings with her Chinese and Russian counterparts and Chief of General Staff of Kyrgyz Armed Forces.
- Key bilateral defence issues, including defence co-operation, were discussed.
- Note : India became a full member of the SCO in 2017.
- Current Emperor of Japan Akihito today became the 1st Japanese Emperor to step down from the throne in more than 200 years.

- The 85-year-old was given legal permission to abdicate after saying he felt unable to fulfil his role because of his age and declining health.
- Note : Akihito's son, Crown Prince Naruhito, will ascend the Chrysanthemum throne tomorrow, beginning a new era.
- Lebanon’s capital Beirut has set a new Guinness World Record for most number of national flags displayed in one city for 24 hours.

- By raising a total of 26,852 Lebanese flags for 24 hours Beirut broke the record of New York’s Waterloo of raising 25,599 flags.
- The European Union has extended a ban on selling arms to Myanmar and prolonged sanctions against high-ranking officials till 30th April 2020, over their role in the Rohingya crisis.

- The EU said in a statement that the sanctions include an embargo on arms and equipment that can be used for internal repression, an export ban on dual-use goods for use by the military and border guard police, and export restrictions on equipment for monitoring communications that might be used for internal repression.
- Pakistan's Senate has passed a bill to fix 18 years as the minimum age of marriage for girls, in a move aimed to end the practice of child marriage.

- Some lawmakers have opposed the bill saying fixing the age of 18 years is against the Sharia law.
- The bill now awaits a discussion in the lower house- the National Assembly.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- India has became world's 4th biggest military spender according to Swedish arms watchdog SIPRI.

- India, which was the fifth largest military spender in 2017, spent $66.5 billion in 2018.

- Ride-hailing app Ola is going to launch a credit card, likely in partnership with State Bank of India (SBI) and begin pilots as early as next week.

- Walmart-owned Flipkart is partnering with Axis Bank or HDFC Bank will also launch it's own credit card later this quarter.
- Note : Amazon had earlier launched co-branded credit card in partnership with ICICI Bank.
- With Wheat production at record high, government has raised import duty on wheat from existing 30% to 40% to support local farmers interest.

- The higher duty will help offtake of domestically produced grain by discouraging milers to import wheat but to buy local produce and help protect farm prices.
- India’s wheat production for 2018-19 crop year (which runs from July to June) is 2% higher than 2018, at a recored production of 99.12 million tonnes.
- The Home Ministry has ordered for advance release of financial assistance of Rs. 1086 crore for four states to assist them in undertaking preventive and relief measures in response to cyclonic storm FANI.

- Based on the decision of National Crisis Management Committee, the amount will be released to their State Disaster Response Fund.
- Around 200 crore rupees have been sanctioned for Andhra Pradesh, over 340 crore for Odisha, 309 crore for Tamil Nadu and 235 crore rupees for West Bengal.

- Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria will take over as the Vice Chief of Indian Air Force (IAF) tomorrow.

- He is going to replace Air Marshal Anil Khosla who is superannuating on April 30.
Science & Technology
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced that it is preparing to send the next man and the 1st woman to the lunar South Pole by the year 2024.

- NASA had earlier said it was also aiming for a human Mars landing in 2033.
- The Indian Army has claimed to have sighted "mysterious footprints" of a Yeti, a mythical creature of folklore in Nepal.

- Sharing the pictures of the 32x15-inch footprints, the Army tweeted its Mountaineering Expedition Team saw the creature's footprints for the first time on April 9 and the creature has only been sighted at Nepal's Makalu-Barun National Park in the past.
- A Boeing 787 Dreamliner flown by Air India from Delhi landed at the Hyderabad airport today without provision for additional fuel.

- This is India's first flight to be operated without carrying any additional fuel.
- India will have a Defence Cyber Agency (DCA) by May this year to tackle threats arising from hackers, mostly from Pakistan and China.

- Senior Navy officer Rear Admiral Mohit Gupta would reportedly head the DCA.
Deaths
- Filmmaker John Singleton (51), the youngest-ever person as well as the first African-American to be nominated for the Best Director Oscar, has passed away.

- He earned two Oscar nominations for his film 'Boyz N the Hood' in 1992.
Awards & Honors
- Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and Arsenal Women Football Club's Vivianne Miedema were named Professional Footballers' Association Players' Player of the Year for the 2018-19 season.

- Van Dijk is the 1st defender to take the award since Chelsea centre-back John Terry in 2004-05.
- Manchester City's Raheem Sterling and Georgia Stanway were named as the Young Players of the Year.
Sports Current Affairs
- The New Zealand Open Badminton tournament 2019 began in Auckland this morning.

- Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal will be aiming to win her second title this year.
- She will take on China's Wang Zhiyi in the Women's Singles first round tomorrow.
- Parupalli Kashyap, B Sai Praneeth, HS Prannoy, Subhankar Dey and Laskshya Sen will be seen in action in the Men's section.
- Doubles categories will also witness the Indian participation.
- Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova defeated Anett Kontaveit to win Stuttgart's Porsche Grand Prix for the first time today.

- This was Kvitova's 2nd title of the year.
- Indian para-athletes came up with brilliant performance to secure a Silver and 2 Bronze medals at the Asian Road para-cycling championships at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

- Divij Shah clinched silver while Asian Para Games bronze medallist Gurlal Singh and Hand cyclist Sudhakar Marathe claimed bronze.
- The Indian Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) has decided to bid for the 2024 edition of the biennial World Team Championships.
