International Current Affairs
- US President Donald Trump is going to visit Japan next month and become the 1st world leader to meet Crown Prince Naruhito after he's crowned Japan's new emperor on May 1.

- Naruhito's 85-year-old father, Emperor Akihito, is ending his three-decade reign on April 30 by abdicating.
- During his visit, Trump will also hold a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
- Egyptians are voting in a referendum that aims to cement the rule of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former coup leader.

- The 3-day plebiscite is expected to approve sweeping constitutional changes that will extend Sisi's term until at least 2024.
- Malaysia has resumed a China-backed rail link project after the Chinese contractor agreed to cut the construction cost by one third to 10.6 billion US dollars.

- The Malaysian government said it will also take up a multibillion-dollar property and transportation project in Kuala Lumpur involving a Chinese state company, calling it a contribution to China's global "Belt and Road" infrastructure initiative.
- India has rebuilt Chhyoiphel Kundeling Monastery in Nepal.

- The Monastery has been reconstructed with Government of India grant of 18.9 million Nepalese rupees.
- The Chhyoiphel Kundeling Monastery was established in 1946 with the active initiation and contribution of Lisankhu villagers.
- It has been carrying out various socio-cultural activities like teaching Buddhism, Thangka painting, wood carving and sculpting etc.
- Indian Naval Ships Kolkata and Shakti will arrive at Qingdao in China on Sunday to participate in the International Fleet Review (IFR) as part of 70th Anniversary celebrations of People's Liberation Army (Navy).

- International Fleet Review is a parade of naval ships, aircraft and submarines, and is organised by nations to promote goodwill, strengthen cooperation and showcase their organisational capabilities.
- IFR also serves as an ideal platform for the world’s navies to showcase their prowess and indigenous ship designing and shipbuilding capabilities in a global and international arena.
- Note : The second IFR conducted by India off Visakhapatnam in February 2016 saw an overwhelming participation of 50 navies with nearly 100 warships.
Science & Technology
- The 7th China International Technology Fair opened today in Shanghai, a national-level professional fair focused on international technology trade.

- Nearly 1,000 companies and organizations are attending the fair, including more than 20 companies and organizations from the British city of Liverpool.
- Research centres from Germany displayed their air filters and other latest technologies.
- The CSITF has become an important showcase for the latest technologies worldwide since 2013 when the first exhibition was held.
Deaths
- The 1st-ever woman to pass the NASA astronaut testing in 1961, Jerrie Cobb (88) Passed away.

- Cobb is sometimes also called NASA's first female astronaut candidate, however, NASA didn't accept women as candidates until 1978.
- She became a pilot at the age of 16 and set three separate world aviation records.
- South Africa-born Scotland all-rounder Con de Lange (38) passed away after a lengthy battle with brain tumour.

- In October 2018, Cricket Scotland had launched a fund-raising appeal for De Lange, who played 13 ODIs and eight T20Is for Scotland between 2015 and 2017.
Books & Authors
- A book containing English translation of the 100-year-old classic Punjabi poem about Jallianwala Bagh massacre, 'Khooni Vaisakhi' has been released in Abu Dhabi.

- The poem was translated by Mr Suri whose grandfather, revolutionary poet and novelist Nanak Singh, a Jallianwala Bagh survivor, wrote it after witnessing first-hand the events of April 13, 1919.
New Appointments
- 1987-batch Indian Foreign Service officer Jaideep Sarkar has been appointed as India's next High Commissioner to South Africa.

- He is currently serving as India's ambassador in Bhutan.
- He served in Indian Missions in Tokyo, Seoul and Bangladesh as well.
- The government also appointed Suhel Ajaz Khan, presently serving as India's Deputy Chief of Mission in Saudi Arabia, as next Ambassador to Lebanon.
- Paytm Payments Bank has appointed the Co-founder and CEO of women's job and career community SHEROES, Sairee Chahal, to its board of directors.

- Paytm had collaborated with SHEROES in 2018 to roll out a women-only social community platform for interaction on topics including health and career, among others.
- SHEROES was founded in the year 2013.
Sports Current Affairs
- India's Bajrang Punia has regained the world number one spot in the Men's 65-kilogram freestyle category rankings released by United World Wrestling.

- Punia, who won Gold in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games as well as a silver in the World Championships last year, secured 58 points ahead of Akhmed Chakaev of Russia.
- The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has asked Goa to pay ₹10-crore penalty for repeatedly missing the deadline for hosting 36th National Games.

- Goa had expressed its inability to host the event in March-April this year owing to the general elections.
- The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has imposed a hefty fine of one lakh seventy-six thousand Euros on Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) for not honouring the Pro League commitments.
- Former World Champion, Mirabai Chanu will spearhead India’s challenge at the Asian Weightlifting Championship, 2019 that begins at Ningbo, China today.

- Chanu will be competing in the 49kg category from 48kg following the International Weightlifting Federations’s rejig of weight categories.
