Year End Review: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change

  • PM Shri Narendra Modi has been awarded the United Nation’s highest environmental honour Champions of the Earth Award. The award was awarded for his pioneering work in championing the International Solar Alliance.
  • UNEP chose India to host World Environment Day (WED) on 5th June 2018. The theme of this year’s WED was Plastic Pollution.
  • Green Goods Campaign was launched to protect environment and promote good living in the country. Worldwide it has earned accolades. To spread awareness about GGD, MoEFCC has prepared high-quality Audio-visual creatives in collaboration with Shri Amitabh Bachchan.
  • MoEFCC has launched Clean Air Campaign, a joint campaign with Delhi government, NDMC, CPCB and other municipal agencies for clean air in Delhi. It is aimed to sensitise ground level functionaries and the general public to enforce the habit of environmental protection.
  • Green Skill Development Programme has been launched in order to skill youth in environment, forest and wildlife sectors and enables them to be gainfully employed / self-employed.
  • “Harit Diwali – Swasth Diwali” campaign undertook by MoEFCC.
  • The ministry has reclassified Bamboo and removed it from the category of a tree.
  • The ministry hosted international meetings of the Like-Minded Developing Countries and BASIC i.e Brazil, South Africa, India and China. These meetings have helped in strengthening and securing common interest and positions of developing countries in the run-up to COP-24 to UNFCC.
  • An India Pavilion was set up during COP 24 in Katowice, Poland. The theme was ‘One World One Sun One Grid’. The pavilion became a platform to bring together 43 different stakeholder institutions including central ministries, state governments, think tanks, civil society organisations to showcase their climate change action taken in various sectors through 20 side events.
  • The ministry has implemented two programmes under the Climate Change Action Programme namely the National Carbonaceous Aerosols Programme (NCAP) and Long Term Ecological Observatories (LTEO).
  • India submitted its Second Biennial Report (BUR) to UNFCC. 
  • To stop burning of crop residue which leads to pollution in north India the central government has approved a new Central Sector Scheme on Promotion of Agricultural mechanization for in-situ management of Crop Residue in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Utter Pradesh and NCT of Delhi for the period from 2018-19 and 2019-20.
