Global Nutrition Report 2018: Highlights

About

  • It came into existence following the first Nutrition for Growth Initiative Summit 2013. 
  • It was devised as a mechanism for tracking the commitments made by 100 stakeholders spanning governments, aid donors, civil society, the UN and businesses. 
  • It is the World’s leading report on the state of Global nutrition. 
  • It is delivered by independent expert group and guided at strategic level by a stakeholder group. 
  • The purpose of the Global Nutrition Report is to collate and communicate high-quality, comprehensive and credible data on nutrition as a mean of tracking progress, guiding, inspiring action, and committing and financing the end of malnutrition in all of its forms. 

Findings

  • The global burden of malnutrition remains unacceptably at high and progress is unacceptably slow. 
  • 22.2% of children globally i.e. 150.8 million in total are stunted (aged 0-59 months). 
  • 7.5% i.e. 50.5 million children are wasted. 
  • 5.6% i.e. 38.3 million children are overweight. 
  • Malnutrition affects each and every country in this world. 
  • The issues of micronutrient deficiencies, fragility, conflict and violence, amount of attention being paid to adolescents need to be addressed. 

India's Status

  • India is also facing a major malnutrition crisis. It is a country with the highest number of stunted children in the world. India is home to 46.6 million stunted children out of 150.8 million children globally, followed by Nigeria (13.9 million) and Pakistan (10.7 million). 
  • It is also country with the highest number of children who are wasted. It is home to half of the global wasted burden i.e. 25.5 million out of 50.5 million followed by Nigeria and Indonesia. 
  • Home to more than a million children who are overweight. 
  • High and very high level of stunting is mainly found in central and northern India.
