Daily Vocabulary for Bank Exams: 27 December 2018

Vocabulary is an important part of English that helps you deal with all kinds of questions in objective as well as descriptive papers of various exams. In the recently concluded Banking Exams, we witnessed that a major part of the exam was based on vocabulary. Many questions were vocab based and we can expect the same in the upcoming exams. It becomes very important to learn ample amount of words for the upcoming Government Job Exams. You can learn new words daily from our Daily Word List . Here is a list of words from daily Editorials. Learn the words and make your own sentences on the basis of the given word list.
1.  FRANTICALLY (adverb) पागलपन
Meaning: in a distraught way owing to fear, anxiety, or other emotion.
Synonyms: frenziedly, heedlessly, recklessly, wantonly.
Antonyms: imperturbably, peacefully, placidly, meekly.
Usage: The veterinarian ran frantically from room to room looking for the escaped hamster.

2.  PETRIFY (verb)  हक्का बक्का कर देना
Meaning: to deprive of emotional or intellectual vitality.
Synonyms: castrate, deaden, devitalize, enervate.
Antonyms: enliven, invigorate, stimulate, vivify.
Usage: Peer pressure have so petrified the thinking of the company's top brass that they haven't produced an innovative product in years.

3.  SWERVE (verb)  झटके से मुड़ना
Meaning: change or cause to change direction abruptly.
Synonyms: deviate, skew, curve, turn aside.
Antonyms: straighten, unbend, uncurl.
Usage: The car swerved sharply to avoid the squirrel in the road.

4.  RIVETING (adjective)  दिलचस्प
Meaning: holding the attention or provoking interest.
Synonyms: engaging, enthralling, fascinating, intriguing.
Antonyms: sterile, humdrum, pedestrian, monotonous.
Usage: Dressed in dark clothes with dark hair and olive skin with a dark stare, he was both riveting and frightening.

5.  QUAFF (verb)  एक ही साँस में पीना
Meaning: drink (something, especially an alcoholic drink) heartily.
Synonyms: swallow, gulp, guzzle, imbibe.
Antonyms: spit, eject, throw up,
Usage: The huge athlete was able to quaff down a gallon of water in less than two minutes.

6.  OTIOSE (adjective) प्रभावहीन
Meaning: producing no results
Synonyms: abortive, ineffectual, inefficacious, unproductive.
Antonyms: efficacious, potent, productive, virtuous.
Usage: Since you haven't read the book, I suppose that it would be otiose to inquire what you thought of it.

7.  HUBRIS (noun) अभिमान
Meaning: excessive pride or self-confidence.
Synonyms: arrogance, conceitedness, haughtiness, superciliousness, hauteur.
Antonyms: modesty, timidity, discreetness, propriety.
Usage: The leader of the cult had so much hubris he believed the government would never be able to capture him.

8.  SLATE (verb)  आलोचना करना
Meaning: criticize severely.
Synonyms: pillory, lambaste, revile, vilify, pummel.
Antonyms: glory, kudos, encomium, exaltation, eulogy.
Usage: The new play was slated by the critics.

9.  FOIST (verb)  थोपना
Meaning: impose an unwelcome or unnecessary person or thing on.
Synonyms: thrust, offload, inflict, forge, distort, falsify.
Antonyms: aid, help, overlook, prevent.
Usage: Despite public opinion, the president chose to foist his inadequate healthcare plan on the nation.

10.  PROCURE (verb)  परिश्रम से प्राप्त करना
Meaning: obtain (something), especially with care or effort.
Synonyms: acquire, attain, bag, earn, secure.
Antonyms: give up, relinquish, surrender, yield, forfeit.
Usage: If you would like to go on the school field trip, you must first procure your parents’ signature on this permission form.
