Global Hunger Index 2018-Summary

Why in news?

  • The Global Hunger Index (GHI) was published recently for the year 2018 in which India ranks 103 out of 119 countries.

About GHI:

  • GHI is annually released jointly by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.
  • It is a Multidimensional measure which describes state of hunger situation on regional, national and global level.
  • It was published annually by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) since 2006 but IFPRI has stepped aside from its involvement in the report.
  • It ranks the countries on 0 to 100 point scale with 0 (No hunger) being the best and 100 being the worst.
  • It takes into account four parameters for calculation of GHI which are
    • Undernourished population (1/3 weightage) – the share of population that is undernourished.
    • Child Wasting (1/6) - Children under the age of five having low weight for height.
    • Child Stunting (1/6) - Children under the age of five having low height for age.
    • Infant / Child mortality (1/3).

Where source data for the four indicators come from?

  • Undernourishment data is provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of UN (FAO).
  • Child mortality data is sourced from the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME).
  • Child Wasting and Child stunting data is sourced from the joint database of UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Bank, as well as from WHO’s continuously updated Global Database on Child Growth and Malnutrition, the most recent reports of the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), and statistical tables from UNICEF.
