Hindu Editorial Topic 1 :  "Eyes wide shut: on the unrest in Upper Assam"
  • Unrest - angry or violent behaviour by people who are protesting against something
  • Polarisation - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other, or to cause this to happen
  • Facile - too simple to deal with the difficulties of a real situation
  • Gunning down - to shoot someone and kill them or injure them badly, especially someone who is not guilty of anything, or who is not carrying a gun
  • Isolate - happening only once, or existing only in one place
  • Eruption - the act of starting suddenly and violently
  • Context - the general situation in which something happens, which helps to explain it
  • Crucial - something that is crucial is extremely important because it has a major effect on the result of something
  • Symptomise - to be a sign of a larger problem
  • Fault line - a problem that may not be obvious and could cause something to fail
  • Amendment - a change made to a law or agreement
  • At the heart of - to be the most important part of something
  • Schism - an occasion when one group divides into two groups because of a disagreement
  • Eventually - at the end of a process or period of time in which many things happen
  • Left out - to not include someone or something
  • Elaborate - very detailed and complicated
  • Draws to a close - to end
  • Known known - something that you know that you know
  • Immigrant - someone who comes to live in a country from another country
  • Counterpart - someone or something that has the same job or purpose as another person or thing, but in a different country, time, situation, or organization
  • Ethnic - relating to a group of people who have the same culture and traditions
  • Nativist - a person who supports the idea of nativism (= the idea that people who were born in a country are more important than people who have come to the country from somewhere else)
  • Advocate - to publicly support a particular policy or way of doing things
  • Even-handed - dealing fairly with all the people involved in a situation
  • Persecution - extremely bad treatment of someone, especially because of their race, religion, or political beliefs
  • Shutdown - an occasion when a business or large piece of equipment stops operating, usually for a temporary period
  • Counter - to react to something with an opposing opinion or action, or to defend yourself against something
  • Kernel - the most important part of something
  • Unequivocal - clear, definite, and without doubt
  • Hedge - to try to avoid giving an answer or taking any action
  • Innovative - new, original, and advanced
  • Ensuing - an ensuing event or activity happens after something else, often as a result of it
  • Polarise - to cause something, especially something that contains different people or opinions, to divide into two completely opposing groups
  • Shrill - very loud, high, and unpleasant
  • Rhetoric - a style of speaking or writing that is intended to influence people
  • Spill over - to spread to other areas
  • Emanate - to come from a particular place
  • Valley - a low area of land between mountains or hills, usually with a river flowing through it
  • Instance - an example of something happening
  • Harass - to keep annoying or upsetting someone, for example by criticizing them, attacking them, or treating them in a way that is offensive to them
  • Tragedy - a very sad event that causes people to suffer or die
  • Grim - grim news, situations, or events are unpleasant and make you feel upset and worried
  • Potentially - possibly true in the future, but not true now
  • Thus far - until now or until the present stage in a process
  • Handiwork - used in an angry way for referring to something bad that someone has done
  • Meanwhile - at the same time
  • Monitor - to regularly check something or watch someone in order to find out what is happening
  • Resident - someone who lives in a particular place
  • Ethnicity - the fact that someone belongs to a particular ethnic group
  • Permeate - if an attitude or feeling permeates something, you can feel or see its influence clearly in every part of that thing

  • Mob rule - a situation in which a crowd of people control a place illegally
  • Blasphemy - something that is considered offensive to God or someone’s religious beliefs
  • Empower - to give someone more control over their life or more power to do something
  • Extremist - someone who has beliefs or opinions that are considered to be extremely unreasonable by most people
  • Capitulate - to stop opposing what someone wants and agree to it, usually because they are stronger than you
  • Acquittal - an official judgment in a court of law that someone is not guilty of the crime they were accused of
  • Death row - the part of a prison for criminals who are going to be executed (=legally killed)
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Regressive - relating to behaviour that is not responsible or controlled
  • Capitulate - to stop opposing what someone wants and agree to it, usually because they are stronger than you
  • Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
  • Protester - someone who publicly shows their opposition to something such as a law or policy
  • Firebrand - someone who has strong feelings, especially about politics, and wants to change things or encourage other people to feel the same
  • Cleric - a leader of any religion
  • Sit-in - a protest in which people sit down in order to stop a business from operating until their demands are listened to
  • Acquittal - an official judgment in a court of law that someone is not guilty of the crime they were accused of
  • Protester - someone who publicly shows their opposition to something such as a law or policy
  • Islamist - someone who follows Islam very strictly
  • Outskirt - the areas of a town or city that are furthest away from the centre
  • Take the oath - to formally promise to tell the truth in a court of law
  • Strike a deal with - to agree to do business with another person or company
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Fire - to make someone leave their job, sometimes as a punishment
  • Extremist - someone who has beliefs or opinions that are considered to be extremely unreasonable by most people
  • Mob - a large crowd of people that is dangerous or difficult to control
  • Dictate - to influence or control how something is done
  • Erode - to gradually reduce the strength or importance of something, or to be gradually reduced in this way
  • Bloodshed - a situation in which people are killed or injured, especially during fighting
  • Prophet - according to some religions, a man sent by God to lead people and teach them their religious beliefs
  • Convict - proved to be guilty of a crime by a court of law
  • Sentence - when a judge sentences someone, they officially state what someone’s punishment will be
  • Widespread - happening or existing in many places, or affecting many people
  • Condemnation - a public statement in which someone criticizes someone or something severely
  • Persecute - to treat someone extremely badly, or to refuse them equal rights, especially because of their race, religion, or political beliefs
  • Minority - a small number of people or things that are part of a larger group but different in some way from most of the group
  • Outspoken - an outspoken person states their opinion honestly, even if other people do not like it
  • Secular - not religious, or not connected with religion
  • Campaign - to try to achieve political or social change by persuading other people or the government to do something
  • Assassinate - to kill a famous or important person, especially for political reasons or for payment
  • Amendment - a change made to a law or agreement
  • Acquit - to state officially that someone is not guilty of the crime they were accused of
  • Controversial - a controversial subject, opinion, or decision is one that people disagree about or do not approve of
  • Legislation - a law, or a set of laws
  • Rein in - to limit or control something that has developed too much or has continued for too long
  • Protest - a strong complaint expressing disagreement, disapproval, or opposition
  • Capitulate - to stop opposing what someone wants and agree to it, usually because they are stronger than you
  • Subsequently - after something else happened
  • Disservice - to do something that makes people’s opinion of someone or something not as good as it should be
  • Embolden - to give someone more confidence to do something
