Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Beyond criticism?: on 'Sarkar' controversy"
- Beyond - further away than something else
- Criticism - comments that show that you think something is wrong or bad
- Controversy - a disagreement, especially about a public policy or a moral issue that a lot of people have strong feelings about
- Uproar - a situation in which a lot of people complain about something angrily or make a lot of noise
- Streak - a part of someone’s character, or a type of behaviour that is different from the rest of their character
- Intolerance - someone’s refusal to accept behaviour, beliefs, or opinions that are different from their own
- Bullying - behaviour that frightens or hurts someone smaller or weaker
- Shelving - to decide not to use something such as a plan or suggestion now, although you may use it later
- Resort to something - to do or use something because it is the only thing available
- Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
- Intimidation - to deliberately make someone feel frightened, especially so that they will do what you want
- Mute - silent or not speaking
- Ostensibly - used for saying that although someone pretends to have one reason for something, there is in fact another reason
- Offend - to make someone upset and angry by doing or saying something
- Sensibility - the ability to experience deep emotions, especially as a reaction to literature or art
- Rampage - to behave in an uncontrolled way, especially when this involves damaging or destroying property over a wide area
- In chorus - a group of people speaking together
- Decry - to say publicly that you do not approve of someone or something
- Populist - representing the interests and opinions of ordinary people
- Fishery - an area of the sea where fish can be caught to be sold
- Remark - a few words that give the facts or your opinion about someone or something
- Demise - the death of a person
- Tacit - expressed or understood without being said directly
- Endorsement - an occasion when someone gives official or public support to a particular person or thing
- Climate - the general situation or attitudes that people have at a particular time
- Reminder - something that reminds you of something that happened in the past
- Touch the raw nerve - to upset someone by referring to something that they are sensitive about
- Blowback - negative reactions or results that were not intended, such as criticism, protest, or anger
- Dispensation - official permission to do something that people are not normally allowed to do, especially from a religious authority
- Critical of - expressing an opinion when you think something is wrong or bad
- Welfare - the health and happiness of people
- Renowned - famous and admired for a special skill or achievement
- Unfounded - not supported with facts or evidence
- Veiled - a veiled threat, attack, or warning is not direct but is easily understood
- Snip - to cut something
- Enforce - happening because of a situation that you cannot control or prevent
- Censorship - the process of removing parts of books, films, letters etc that are considered unsuitable for moral, religious, or political reasons
- Wilful - done deliberately in order to cause damage or harm
- Emphasise - to give particular importance or attention to something
- Come out - to be spoken, heard, or understood in a particular way
- Curtail - to reduce or limit something, especially something good
- Protagonist - the main character in a play, film, book, or story
- Considerable - large in size, amount, or degree
- Nurturing - to help someone or something to develop
- Ambition - something that you very much want to do
- Ire - anger
- Irony - a strange, funny, or sad situation in which things happen in the opposite way to what you would expect
- Arena - the people and activities involved with a particular subject or activity
- Nuance - a slight difference that may be difficult to notice but is fairly important
- Offending - causing a problem, or breaking a rule
- Orchestrate - to plan and organize a complicated event or course of action, especially without being noticed, so that it achieves the result you want
- Protest - an occasion when people show that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting, carrying signs, etc
- Ought - used for saying what is the right or sensible thing to do, or the right way to behave
- Celluloid - films or the cinema generally
- Instil - to make someone have a particular feeling or belief
- Stifle - to stop something from developing normally

- Ethos - the set of attitudes and beliefs that are typical of an organization or a group of people

- Atlas - a book of maps
- Elsewhere - in or to another place or other places
- Designated - marked, separated, or given a name for a particular purpose
- Rigour - the quality of being strict or severe
- Ideologue - someone who behaves very strictly according to an ideology, and never doubts that it is right
- Predecessor - the person who had a job or official position before someone else
- In the midst of something - while something else is happening
- Bustle - a lot of noisy activity in a crowded place
- Determined - not willing to let anything prevent you from doing what you have decided to do
- Henceforth - from this time into the future
- Presumably - used for saying that you think something is true based on what you know, although you are not really certain
- Reluctant - not willing to do something
- Association - a connection with a person, group, or organization
- Deputy - someone whose job is the second most important in a department or organization, and who takes the responsibilities of the most important person in some situations
- Jaundiced - tending to dislike or criticize things
- Disregard - the attitude of someone who does not respect something or consider it important
- Strip - to remove something
- Evoke - to bring a particular emotion, idea, or memory into your mind
- Heritage - the art, buildings, traditions, and beliefs that a society considers important to its history and culture
- Iconography - the way in which a social or religious group represent their ideas in pictures
- Revivalism - the process of encouraging new interest in something such as an old tradition
- Prejudice - an unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially the feeling of not liking a particular group of people
- Colonial - relating to a system or period in which one country rules another
- Grassroots - relating to or involving ordinary people, especially in politics
- Assert - if a fact, idea, or tendency asserts itself, it begins to influence someone or something
- Imperial - relating to an empire (=the rule of one country over several other countries)
- Subcontinent - a large area of land that forms part of a continent, especially the part of Asia that contains the countries of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh
- Composite - made up of separate parts
- Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
- Qualitative - concerning the quality of something
- Secular - not religious, or not connected with religion
- Resonant - making you think of a similar experience or memory
- Unabashed - not ashamed or embarrassed
- Confluence - a place where two rivers join
- Dispensation - official permission to do something that people are not normally allowed to do, especially from a religious authority
- Defiant - refusing to obey a person or rule
- Up the ante - to try to get a greater advantage from a situation by taking a bigger risk
- Reinforce - to make an idea, belief, or feeling stronger
- Polarised - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other, or to cause this to happen
- Terrain - an area of land, usually one that has a particular physical feature
- Frenzy - a state of uncontrolled activity or emotion
- Legacy - something such as a tradition or problem that exists as a result of something that happened in the past
- Assimilation - the process of making new ideas or pieces of information part of your knowledge so that you can use them effectively
- Constitutional - allowed by the constitution of a country or organization
- Ethos - the set of attitudes and beliefs that are typical of an organization or a group of people
- Assault - a violent attack
