5 High Courts get new Chief Justices - Highlights

The government today appointed new chief justices for 5 high courts. The appointments were made in courts in Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Calcutta, Gauhati and Bombay. Here is the list of newly appointed chief justices.

List of Newly Appoint Chief Justices of India

Bombay High Court - NH Patil

Justice Naresh Harishchandra Patil, a jude of the Bombay High Court, has been elevated as its chief justice. He obtained his law degree in 1979 from the Bombay University. He dealt with Constitutional, civil and criminal law during his years of legal practice at the Bombay High Court.

Calcutta High Court - DK Gupta

Justice Debasis Kar Gupta, a judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been elevated as Chief justice in the same court. He enrolled as an advocate in 1982. His areas of practice included constitutional, civil, labour and service law. 

Uttarakhand High Court - Ramesh Ranganathan

Justice Ramesh Rangnath, a judge of the Andhra Pradesh and Telengana High Court has been appointed Chief justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. He was elevated as an additional judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in May 2005. He was appointed a permanent judge in February 2006. He has previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Hyderabad High Court from July 30, 2016, to July 6, 2018.

Gauhati High Court - A S Bopanna

Justice Ajjikuttira Somaiah Bopanna, a judge of the Karnataka High Court has been sent to the Gauhati High Court as chief justice. He enrolled as an advocate in 1984, following which he dealt with civil, constitutional, company, service and labour matters. 

Sikkim High Court - Vijai Kumar Bist

Justice Vijai Kumar Bist, a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court , has been elevated as chief justice of the Sikkim High Court. Chief Justice VK Bist enrolled with the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council in 1984. He has practiced in the Allahabad High Court as well as the Uttarakhand High Court. He has served as standing counsel for various government entities.  

Important Note : With these appointments, all the 24 high courts in India have full-time chief justices.
