- Power play - tactics exhibiting or intended to increase a person's power or influence
- Firm - strong
- Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
- Unsavoury - involving unpleasant, dishonest, or immoral things that you do not want to think or talk about
- Controversy - a disagreement, especially about a public policy or a moral issue that a lot of people have strong feelings about
- Turf war - arguments between people or groups who each want to control a particular area
- At the helm - in charge or in the position of a leader
- Malaise - a general feeling of being worried, unhappy, or not satisfied
- Aspect - a particular part, feature, or quality of something
- Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
- Agency - a government department, or an organization connected with a government, that deals with a particular subject
- Shown in a poor light - to make someone / something seem to be bad
- Justified - if you are justified in doing something, you have a good reason for doing it and it is right that you should do it
- Embark on - to start a new project or activity, usually one that will be difficult and will take time
- High-profile - often seen in public, mentioned in newspapers, or appearing on television
- Probe - an attempt to find out the truth about an issue, problem, or accident
- Bribery - the crime of giving money or presents to someone so that they will help you by doing something dishonest or illegal
- Charge - a claim that someone or something is bad or has done something bad
- Pervasive - spreading through the whole of something and becoming a very obvious feature of it
- Second-in-command - someone who is next in rank to the person in charge of something
- Off the hook - having avoided a duty, an unpleasant situation, or a punishment
- On the other hand - in a way that is different from the first thing you mentioned
- Implicate - to show or suggest that someone is involved in something illegal or morally wrong
- Vigilance - the activity of watching a person or situation very carefully so that you will notice any problems or signs of danger immediately
- Controversy - a disagreement, especially about a public policy or a moral issue that a lot of people have strong feelings about
- Precede - to happen or exist before another person or thing
- Under a cloud - with your reputation damaged because you may have done something wrong
- Accused - the person who is on trial in a law court
- Prima facie - based on what seems to be true, before a situation has been examined in detail
- Credible - able to be believed or trusted
- Alleged - claimed to be true, even though this has not been proved
- Exporter - a person, business, or country that sells goods to another country
- Haunt - to make someone feel worried and upset for a long time
- Superintendent - a senior police officer
- Fabricating - to make up a story or piece of information in order to make someone believe something that is not true
- Corroborate - to support what someone says by giving information or evidence that agrees with them
- Perception - a particular way of understanding or thinking about something
- Disillusioned - disappointed because you have discovered that someone or something is not as good as you had believed
- Handmaiden - something that supports something else that is more important
- Augur - to be a sign of what may happen in the future
- Credibility - qualities that someone has that make people believe or trust them
- To a large extent - mainly
- Primary - most important
- Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
- Overrule - o officially change a decision that someone else has made
- Circumstance - a fact or condition that affects a situation
- Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
- Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
- Impartial - not connected to or influenced by one particular person or group

- Widen - to make something wider
- Yield - to produce something useful
- Reward - something good that happens or that you receive because of something that you have done
- Tax return - an official document on which you give details of your income so that the government can calculate the amount of tax that you have to pay
- Corporate - relating to large companies, or to a particular large company
- Witness - to see something happen
- Significant - very large or noticeable
- Surpassing - better or greater when compared with others
- Buoyancy - success and a lot of activity in an economy, market, etc
- Compliance - the practice of obeying a law, rule, or request
- Attribute something to someone/something - to believe that something is the result of a particular situation, event, or person’s actions
- Measure - an action that is intended to achieve or deal with something
- Tenure - the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
- Intent - the intention to do something
- In other words - used for introducing another way of saying or explaining something, especially a more simple way
- Going forward - used, especially in business, to mean "in the future"
- Regressive - (of tax) lower on large amounts of money, so that the rich are less affected
- Impose - to introduce something such as a new law or new system, and force people to accept it
- Standpoint - a way of considering something
- Distortion - a change that makes something no longer true or accurate
- Amidst - if something happens amid particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
- Stature - the good reputation a person or organization has, based on their behaviour and ability
- Bureaucratic - involving a lot of complicated rules, details, and processes
