International Current Affairs
  • Today (29th September) is World Heart Day.
    • The World Heart Day is an international campaign held on 29th September by the World Heart Foundation to inform people about cardiovascular diseases, which are the biggest cause of death.
    • This day promotes preventative measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
    • Theme of World Heart Day 2018 : "My Heart, Your Heart"
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin is going to visit India from October 4-5.
    • During this visit, he will attend the 19th India-Russia Annual Summit.
    • Putin and PM Narendra Modi will discuss key aspects of the further development of Russian-Indian privileged strategic partnership and exchange opinions on current international and regional issues.
    • The main highlight of the meeting is likely to be the gifting of three Mig-21 fighter jets to Russia.
Science & Technology
  • India's first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory ASTROSAT has completed 3 years in Earth's orbit. 
    • Launched on September 28, 2015, ASTROSAT has helped scientists confirm the presence of younger stars in globular clusters, earlier believed to contain only old stars. 
    • The 1,513 kg satellite has observed over 750 sources so far and gathered data, which has resulted in nearly 100 publications.
  • China is planning to bring its Second Space Lab, Tiangong-2 back to Earth in July 2019 in a "controlled deorbit".
    • This comes six months after China's first space lab, Tiangong-1, went "out of control" and burned up in the atmosphere before hitting the Pacific Ocean.
Deaths
  • Former Gujarat minister and Congress leader Manoharsinh Jadeja (83) passed away.
    • Jadeja, a descendant of the erstwhile royal family of Rajkot, earned the degree of barrister-at-law from Cambridge University and had a stint in cricket before entering politics. 
    • The octogenarian was popularly known as 'Dada'.
Awards & Honors
  • The winners of 2018 Nobel Prizes will be announced from 1st October 2018.
    • Beginning with Medicine laureates, followed by Physics, Chemistry, Peace, and Economics in the coming days. 
    • Important Note : Nobel Prize for Literature has been postponed for the first time in 70 years due to the #MeToo scandal, in which the husband of a Swedish Academy member was accused of rape.
  • Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was today conferred an honorary doctorate by National Institute of Technology, Goafor his contribution to the state and the country. 
  • Assam's Binita Jain became the 1st contestant to win ₹1 crore on Amitabh Bachchan-hosted 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' season 10. 
New Appointments
  • Leading life insurance company in India, Max Life Insurance has announced that it's Managing Director Rajesh Sud has resigned after "18 years of building" the company. 
    • Prashant Tripathy, currently a Senior Director and Chief Financial Officer of the company, will replace Sud as the new MD from January.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India defeat Bangladesh to win Asia Cup for the second straight time and overall seventh time. 
    • This is the third time in four Asia Cup editions that Bangladesh have finished as runners-up.
