- Trauma - a bad experience that makes you feel very upset, afraid, or shocked
- Stepped up - increased in amount or strength
- Assist - to help someone or something
- Unprecedented - never having happened or existed before
- Deluge - a very heavy fall of rain
- Unleash - to do or to cause something that has a very powerful or harmful effect
- Brimming - to be full of something
- Massive - very large or heavy
- Landslip - a small fall of earth or rocks down the side of a hill
- Overwhelm - to exist in such great amounts that someone or something cannot deal with them
- Rescue - to save someone from a dangerous or unpleasant situation
- Assessment - the process of making a judgment or forming an opinion, after considering something or someone carefully
- Devastation - damage or destruction affecting a large area or a lot of people
- Marooned - left or caught in a place and unable to leave
- Far-flung - far away from where you are or from towns and cities
- Respite - a short period of rest from having to deal with a difficult or unpleasant situation
- Acknowledge - to accept or admit that something exists, is true, or is real
- Legion - a large group or number of people
- Stranded - left somewhere with no way of going anywhere else
- Disaster - something very bad that happens and causes a lot of damage or kills a lot of people
- Catastrophic - causing a lot of damage, or making a lot of people suffer
- Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
- Outpouring - the act of expressing a strong emotion
- Goodwill - a feeling of wanting to be friendly and helpful to someone
- Abroad - in or to a foreign country
- Distress - an unpleasant and difficult situation caused by a lack of money, food, or other basic things
- Rehabilitation - to return someone to a good, healthy, or normal life or condition afterthey have been in prison, been very ill, etc
- Initiative - an important action that is intended to solve a problem
- Volunteer - someone who is not paid for the work that they do
- Advisory - an official warning
- Modality - the way in which something exists, is experienced or is done
- Merging - to combine or join together
- Benign - kind and nice
- Cope with - to deal successfully with a difficult situation or job

- Well-placed - to be in a particular place, especially one that is convenient or has other advantages
- A thing or two - a few things
- Composite - something that is made of various different parts
- Confined to - if something is confined to one area or group of people, it happens only in that area or affects only that group of people
- Keenly - very strongly
- Contest - to compete for a job or for success in a competition
- Respective - relating or belonging to each of the separate people or things you have just mentioned
- Behemoth - someone or something that is very large
- Diplomacy - the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
- Tally - a record of the number of things that someone has done, won, or achieved
- Line-up - to form a row, or to put people or things in a row
- Runner-up - a person or team that does not win a competition or race but is second, or is close to winning
- Commonwealth - a group of countries that have the same political or economic interests
- Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
- Powerhouse - something such as a country or organization that has a lot of power or influence
- Track and field - sports events in which people compete against each other in running races, jumping, and throwing things
- Dilemma - a situation in which you have to make a difficult decision
- Crackdown - strong action that someone in authority takes to stop a particular activity
- Doping - the use of drugs to enhance sporting performance
- Exception - someone or something that is not included in a rule, group, or list or that does not behave in the expected way
- Pull out - to stop being involved in an activity, event, or situation
- Deplete - to reduce the amount of something or the number of things
- Haul - an amount of something that was obtained
- Glimpse - an experience that gives you an idea of what something is like
- Debut - to perform or be performed in public for the first time
