International current Affairs
  • UK's Prince Harry has been given the title 'Duke of Sussex' by his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, ahead of his wedding to American actress Meghan Markle today. 
    • Markle will become 'Duchess of Sussex' after this wedding. 
    • The other titles given to Prince Harry are 'Earl of Dumbarton' and 'Baron Kilkeel'.
  • China's Air Force has landed bombers on islands and reefs of South China Sea as part of a training exercise in the disputed region.
    • The bombers include nuclear strike-capable H-6K to improve China's ability to "reach all territory and strike in all directions". 
    • Note : Countries like Vietnam and Taiwan also claim parts of the region.
National Current Affairs
  • PM Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone for India's longest road tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir. 
    • The over 14-km-long Zojila tunnel will shorten the distance between Srinagar and Leh from 3.5 hours to 15 minutes. 
    • Note : It will also be Asia's longest bidirectional tunnel and will cost around Rs. 6,809 crore to build.
  • BS Yeddyurappa today resigned 55 hours after taking oath as the Karnataka CM, ahead of the floor test. 
  • The Centre has launched a clean-up drive for 24 beaches and 24 polluted water bodies with special focus on the Yamuna waterfront in Delhi. 
    • The Union Environment Ministry has allocated Rs. 10 lakh for each beach and water body.
    • Important Note : This is being done ahead of the World Environment Day on June 5, which will be hosted by India this year. 
  • The Centre has approved Rs. 685-crore relief funds for ensuring that Punjab farmers do not resort to burning stubble.
    • Note ; Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh collectively burn 23 million tonne stubble between October and November.

Awards & Honors
  • The NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation) Limited has bagged the prestigious S&P Global PLATTS Global Metals Award 2018 in corporate social responsibility (CSR) category held at London.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)'s Monetary Policy Committee will meet for three days in June for the second bi-monthly policy review instead of the usual two days for the first time ever. 
    • The central bank said that the change in schedule is due to "administrative" reasons.
    • The RBI said the meeting would be held from June 4-6, instead of scheduled dates of June 5-6.
  • The RBI today imposed a penalty of Rs. 5 crore on South Indian Bank for non-compliance with directions issued by it. 
    • The non-compliance pertained to bad loan classification, Know Your Customer (KYC) guidelines and treasury function. 
    • Note : In April, RBI had slapped a fine of Rs. 3 crore on IDBI Bank for failing to comply with norms related to reporting of bad loans.
  • The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of Rs. 50,000/- on Universal Co-operative Urban Bank, Mancherial, Telangana. 
    • The penalty has been imposed on the bank as it had violated RBI’s directive and guidelines on loans and advances to directors and their relatives.
Deaths
  • Acclaimed Telugu writer and recipient of Sahitya Akademi award, Peddibhotla Subbaramaiah (79), passed away.
    • He has written more than 350 stories and penned eight novels, and several of them were translated in English and other languages too.
    • The late writer shot to fame with his compilation of stories Peddibhotla Subbaramaiah Kadhalu-1 for which he won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award in 2012.

New Appointments
  • The US Senate today voted in favour of appointing US President Donald Trump's nominee Gina Haspel as intelligence agency CIA's Director
    • With her appointment, Haspel became the first woman to lead the spy agency.  
  • Fox News has named Suzanne Scott as its first-ever female CEO after Roger Ailes was ousted as CEO in 2016 amid sexual harassment allegations.  
  • Hindustan Unilever (HUL) Non-Executive Chairman Harish Manwani has been appointed as an Independent Director of Tata Sons.  
  • The U.S India Business Council named Ambika Sharma as its head for India
    • Ms. Sharma was Director General for International at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
  • Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has named BJP MLA and ex-Assembly Speaker KG Bopaiah as the protem Speaker ahead of the floor test at 4 pm today.
    • Note : A protem Speaker serves for a limited period of time until a permanent one is appointed to the office and is said to be selected on the basis of seniority.
  • Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar was sworn-in as the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court
Sports Current Affairs
  • South Africa-born former England captain Kevin Pietersen is set to become the first ever foreign player to deliver the annual MAK Pataudi Memorial Lecture on June 12 in Bengaluru. 
    • Previous speakers include former India cricketers, Sunil Gavaskar, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid and Farokh Engineer.
