International Current Affairs

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that the country will be scrapping reservation in government jobs.
- This move came after students and job-seekers came out in protest against the 56% reservation for special groups.
The Pakistan Supreme Court today disqualified corruption-accused former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from holding public office for life, as he found guilty of corruption in the Panama Papers case.

National Current Affairs

The 99th anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre is being observed today.
- The massacre took place in Amritsar on this day (13th April) in the year 1919, wherein thousands of people in a public protest meeting were fired upon under the command of Brigadier-General Dyer.
- While British officials declared 379 deaths in the massacre, the Indian National Congress estimated over 1,000 deaths.

New Appointments

The government has appointed Bhanu Pratap Sharma as the new Chairman of Banks Board Bureau (BBB).
- He will replace Vinod Rai, whose term ended on March 31.
German automaker Volkswagen has appointed VW brand head Herbert Diess as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
- He will replace Matthias Mueller.
India's largest FMCG company Hindustan Unilever has appointed CEO and MD Sanjiv Mehta as its new Chairman.
- He will replace Harish Manwani, who will retire at the end of June after serving as the Non-Executive Chairman for 13 years.

Science & Technology

China is going to send seeds of Potato, a Flowering Plant, and Silkworm Eggs with its lunar probe later this year to conduct the first biological experiment on the Moon.

The winners of 65th National Awards were announced today.
- 19-year-old Riddhi Sen was named the Best Actor for the Bengali film 'Nagarkirtan'.
- Actress Sridevi was posthumously named the Best Actress for the film 'Mom'.
- Late actor Vinod Khanna was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

19-year-old Naman Tanwar won India its 1st boxing medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning a bronze in the men's 91 kg category today.
Tejaswini Sawant won India its 5th shooting gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning the women's 50m Rifle 3 Positions Finals today.
15-year-old shooter Anish Bhanwala became India's youngest gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games, winning the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Finals with a record score at Gold Coast today.
India will join Russia among the nations that will lose weightlifting spots at the Tokyo 2020Olympics due to the number of doping violations registered against the nation's athletes.
- The new rules state that the countries with 10-19 doping violations from 2008 to 2020, which includes India, will be limited to two men and two women at the Tokyo Olympics.
Indian women's cricket team captain Mithali Raj has become the 1st-ever woman to smash 50 fifties in ODI cricket, achieving the feat against England today.
