  • Homestretch - the last part of a race or other activity
  • Preparedness - the state of being ready for something
  • Contain - to keep something within limits
  • In the face of - in a situation where you have to deal with something unpleasant or difficult
  • Defensive - intended or used for protecting a place during an attack
  • Savvy - the ability to understand and judge people and situations well
  • Relatively - in comparison with someone or something similar
  • Faction - a small group within a larger group, consisting of people with different opinions from the rest
  • -ridden - full of something unpleasant or bad
  • Resist - to oppose or fight against someone or something
  • Polarisation - to cause something, especially something that contains different people or opinions, to divide into two completely opposing groups
  • Witness - to see something happen
  • Face-off - if people or groups face off, they compete or fight with each other
  • Mounted - riding on a horse
  • Warhorse - someone who has a lot of experience of dealing with difficult problems, for example an experienced politician or soldier
  • Asset - a major benefit
  • Arguably - used for stating your opinion or belief, especially when you think other people may disagree
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Handpicked - chosen very carefully for a particular purpose
  • Meddle - to become involved in a situation that you have no right to be involved in, in a way that is annoying
  • Divisive - likely to cause arguments between people
  • Tactic - a particular method or plan for achieving something
  • Aid - to help something to happen more easily or with fewer problems
  • Substantial - large in amount or degree
  • Unveil - the act of officially announcing something such as a plan or a new product that was previously a secret
  • Irrespective - despite a particular fact, situation, or quality
  • Reap dividends - to get something good as a result of something that you do
  • Agitation - a feeling of being worried or upset
  • Refurbish - renovate and redecorate
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Run-up -  to make something very quickly
  • Dampener - depressing
  • Morale - the amount of enthusiasm that a person or group of people feel about their situation at a particular time
  • Booster - something that makes you feel more confident
  • Nose ahead - to get into a position that is slightly in front of someone or something else

  • Rogue - someone who is dishonest
  • Negotiating table - a time, place, or situation in which people discuss something in order to try to reach an agreement
  • Expel -  to officially force someone to leave a place or organization
  • Diplomat - an official whose job is to represent their government in a foreign country
  • Suspicion - a feeling that someone has done something wrong
  • Nerve agent - a chemical that affects the nervous system by disrupting the mechanisms by which nerves transfer messages to organs
  • Defector - a person who leaves his or her own country or group to join an opposing one
  • Expulsion -  an occasion when someone is officially forced to leave an organization or activity permanently
  • Dramatic - sudden and surprising or easy to notice
  • Concerted - involving a lot of people or organizations working together in a determined way

  • Cold War - the unfriendly relations that existed between the Soviet Union and the West from the end of the Second World War to the 1980s
  • Sanction - an official order to stop communication, trade, etc with a country that has broken international law
  • Propaganda - information, especially false information, that a government or organization spreads in order to influence people’s opinions and beliefs
  • Alleged - claimed to be true, even though this has not been proved
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Accuse - to say that someone has done something wrong or committed a crime
  • Arming - to provide people with weapons
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Reclaim - to get something back that someone has taken from you
  • Inconsistent - not always behaving in the same way or producing the same results
  • Bilateral - involving two groups or countries
  • Multilateral - involving more than two groups or countries
  • Scarcely - only just
  • Apparently - based only on what you have heard, not on what you are certain is true
  • Criticism - comments that show that you think something is wrong or bad
  • Long-standing - having existed for a long time
  • Hawk - a politician who prefers using military force to more peaceful methods
  • Collude - to work secretly with someone to do something dishonest
  • Naive - lack of experience of life and tends to trust other people and believe things too easily
  • Undermining -  to make something or someone become gradually less effective, confident, or successful
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
  • Manoeuvre - a clever or dishonest action that you do to get something that you want
  • Exacerbate - to make a problem become worse
  • Instability - a situation that keeps changing, so that you are worried about what might happen
  • Contrary - completely different or opposed to something else
  • Imperative - extremely important and urgent
  • Corollary - something that will also be true if a particular idea or statement is true, or something that will also exist if a particular situation exists
  • Eschew - to avoid doing something, especially for moral reasons
  • Subversion - the action of trying to destroy a government or an established belief, especially by attacking it indirectly in written or spoken material
