Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Enabling a law: rights of the disabled"
  • Enabling - used about laws that allow a government to introduce other laws at a later date
  • Disabled - someone who is disabled is unable to use part of their body or brain properly because of injury or disease
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Struck a blow for something - to do something that supports or defends something
  • Stipulate - to say what is allowed or what is necessary
  • Census - an occasion on which government officials count the people who live in a country and record other information about them
  • Successive - coming or happening one after another in a series
  • Petition - an official document in which you ask a court to take legal action
  • Activist - someone who takes part in activities that are intended to achieve political or social change
  • Humane - caring about the quality of people’s or animal’s lives and trying to be kind to them
  • Infrastructure - the set of systems within a place or organization that affect how well it operates, for example the telephone and transport systems in a country
  • Able-bodied - physically strong and healthy
  • Aspiration - something that you want to achieve, or the wish to achieve something
  • Harness - to control something, usually in order to use its power
  • Geolocation - a way of identifying a mobile phone or internet user’s real geographical location
  • Eminently - very or very much
  • Feasible - possible or likely to succeed
  • For instance - for example
  • Aggregate - to combine into a single group or total
  • Emphasis - special importance or attention that is given to one thing in particular
  • Start-up - a small business that has just been started
  • Rope in - to persuade someone to do something for you
  • Hurdle - one of several problems that you must solve before you can do something successfully
  • Embark on - to start a new project or activity, usually one that will be difficult and will take time
  • Retrofit - to change or improve something such as a machine or a building by adding new parts, equipment, or features to it
  • Demonstrate - to show or make make something clear
  • Resumption - the start of something again after a temporary stop
  • Dialogue - a process in which two people or groups have discussions in order to solve problems
  • Prospect - the possibility that something will happen
  • Thaw - to become more friendly
  • Denuclearisation - to remove nuclear weapons from a place
  • Peninsula - a long piece of land that is mostly surrounded by water, but is joined at one end to a larger area of land
  • Diplomatic - relating to the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Heft - power or strength
  • Consent - permission to do something
  • Ally - a country that makes an agreement with another country that they will work together to help each other
  • Consternation - a shocked or worried feeling, often caused when something unexpected happens
  • Significance -  the importance that something has because it affects other things
  • Impetus - a force that helps something to happen or develop more quickly
  • Altitude - the height of a place or thing above sea level
  • Snoop -  to secretly try to get information that someone would not want you to have
  • Autocrat - someone who has complete power in a country or organization
  • Vantage point - the particular ideas or beliefs that influence the way that you think about things
  • Negotiate - to try to reach an agreement by discussing something in a formal way, especially in a business or political situation
  • Roll-back - to remove something, or to reduce the influence of something
  • Crippling - causing severe damage or problems
  • Sanction - an official order to stop communication, trade, etc with a country that has broken international law
  • Reconciliation - a new and friendly relationship with someone who you argued with or fought with
  • Revival - the process of becoming active, successful, or popular again
  • Alarm - fear or worry that something unpleasant or dangerous might happen
  • Allay - if you allay feelings such as fears, worries, or doubts, you make someone feel less afraid, worried, or full of doubt
  • Apprehension - a feeling of worry or fear that something bad might happen
  • Deferment - temporary delay in taking someone into the military forces
  • Credibility - qualities that someone has that make people believe or trust them
  • Overture - a suggestion or offer that you make to someone
  • Assuage - to make an unpleasant or painful feeling less severe
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Blockade - an official action that is intended to prevent people or goods from moving from one place to another
  • Cumulatively - developing or increasing gradually as a result of more and more additions
  • Patronage - help or money that is given to a person or organization
  • Staunch - loyal, and showing strong belief in something or strong support for something
  • Stand-off - a disagreement or fight in which neither opponent can do anything to win or achieve their aim
  • Votary - someone who is a very keen follower of a particular religion
  • Foster - to help something to develop over a period of time
  • Obstacle - a difficulty or problem that prevents you from achieving something
  • Détente - a situation in which countries that have had an unfriendly relationship become more friendly
