  • Conflict - fighting between countries or groups
  • Violence - actions or words that are intended to hurt people
  • Provoke - to deliberately try to make someone angry
  • Determine - to officially decide something
  • Outskirts - the areas of a town or city that are furthest away from the centre
  • Anticipate - to think that something will probably happen
  • Potential - possible or likely in the future
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Memorial - a structure built to remind people of a famous person or event
  • Prominent - important and well known
  • Valour - the quality of being very brave, especially in war
  • Repudiation - to not accept or agree with something
  • Stereotype - a set idea that people have about what someone or something is like, especially an idea that is wrong
  • Forward-looking - looking at the future in a positive way and happy to try new ideas and methods
  • Commemoration - something intended to honour and remember an important person or event
  • High-profile - attracting a lot of attention and interest from the public and newspapers, television, etc
  • Vandalisation - to deliberately damage or destroy things, especially public property
  • Potential - someone's or something's ability to develop, achieve, or succeed
  • Pent-up - pent up emotions are strong feelings, for example anger, that you do not express so that they gradually become more difficult to control
  • Arson - the illegal use of fire to destroy a house, building, or property
  • Fomenting - to encourage people to have angry feelings or to protest or fight
  • Bubbled over - if a feeling bubbles over, you feel it very strongly and usually show that you are feeling it
  • Livelihood - something such as your work that provides the money that you need to live
  • On the ground - in the place being discussed, especially a place where there is a war or another serious situation
  • Neo - modern, or new
  • Dilute - to make something less strong or effective
  • Atrocity - a cruel and violent act
  • Consolidation - to make the power, position, or achievements you already have stronger or more effective so that they are likely to continue
  • Constituency - a group of people with similar attitudes or interests who are likely to support a particular idea
  • Fault line - a problem that may not be obvious and could cause something to fail

  • On a high - a feeling of great happiness or excitement
  • Federal Reserve - the organization that controls the US national bank
  • Hawkish - supporting the use of force in political relationships rather than discussion or other more peaceful solutions
  • Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
  • Kicked off - to begin, or to begin something
  • Indices - plural of Index
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Bourse - a stock market
  • Traction - the support, interest, etc., that is needed for something to succeed or make progress
  • Significant - very important
  • Broad-based - used to describe something that will affect many different places, activities, etc
  • For instance - for example
  • Macroeconomic - relating to the economic system of a whole country or large region
  • Tailwind - a wind that blows in the same direction in which a vehicle is moving
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Euphoria - a feeling of great happiness that usually lasts for a short time only
  • Starved of - prevented from having enough of what you need
  • Bull market - a situation in the stock market in which the prices of shares are rising
  • Prospect - the possibility that something will happen, especially something good
  • Accommodative - helpful
  • Monetary policy - actions taken by a government to control the amount of money in an economy and how easily available it is, for example by changing the interest rate
  • Dovish - preferring to use peaceful methods to solve problems rather than fighting
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Fuelling - to make something increase or become worse, especially something unpleasant
  • Inflation - an economic process in which prices increase so that money becomes less valuable
  • Deflate - to make changes in an economy in order to lower prices
  • Repatriation - to send money that you earn in a foreign country back to your own country
  • Incentivise - to give someone a reason for wanting to work hard
  • Exert -  to use influence, authority, or power in order to affect or achieve something
  • Meanwhile - at the same time
  • Haven - a safe or peaceful place
  • Taper tantrum - term used to refer to the 2013 surge in U.S. Treasury yields
  • Fickle - likely to change suddenly and without warning
  • Disruptive - causing difficulties that interrupt something or prevent it from continuing
  • Predict - to say what you think will happen in the future
  • Fool’s errand - an effort that is unlikely to be successful
