  • Diktat - an order that must be obeyed, or the act of giving such an order
  • Coercive - using force or threats to make someone do something
  • Interim - temporary and intended to be used or accepted until something permanent exists
  • Anthem - a song that has special importance for a particular group of people, an organization, or a country, often sung on a special occasion
  • Statutory - controlled by a law or statute
  • Directive - an official instruction
  • Mandatory - something that is mandatory must be done, or is demanded by law
  • Wisdom - the ability to use your knowledge and experience to make good decisions and judgments
  • Patron - a person who uses a particular shop, restaurant, hotel, etc., especially regularly
  • Patriotism - strong feelings of love, respect, and duty towards your country
  • Unintended - not deliberate or planned
  • Unforeseen - not expected
  • Consequence - a result of a particular action or situation, often one that is bad or not convenient
  • Audience - the group of people together in one place to watch or listen to a play, film, someone speaking etc
  • Vigilantism - law enforcement undertaken without legal authority by a self-appointed group of people
  • Harangue - to speak to someone or a group of people, often for a long time, in a forceful and sometimes angry way, especially to persuade them
  • Constitutional - allowed by the constitution of a country or organization
  • Singled out - to choose one person or thing from a group for special attention, especially criticism or praise
  • Emphasis - the particular importance or attention that is given to something
  • Prescribe - to tell someone what they must have or do, or to make a rule of something
  • Presume - to believe something to be true because it is very likely, although you are not certain

  • Heartache - feelings of great sadness
  • Deport - to force someone to leave a country, especially someone who has no legal right to be there or who has broken the law:
  • Alarmist - intentionally showing only the bad and dangerous things in a situation, and so worrying people
  • Nail-biting - a nail-biting situation is very exciting or worrying because you do not know how it will end
  • Scare - to (make a person or animal) feel frightened
  • Toying with something - to consider or think about something in a not very serious way, and without making a decision
  • Green card - a document giving someone who is not a US citizen permission to live and work in the US
  • Contentious - causing or likely to cause disagreement
  • Majority - the larger number or part of something
  • Scooped up - to get something, usually something good or valuable, before someone else gets it
  • Assimilate - to become part of a group, country, society, etc., or to make someone or something become part of a group, country, society, etc
  • Backbone - the most important part of something, providing support for everything else
  • Nevertheless - despite what has just been said or referred to
  • Rhetoric - speech or writing intended to be effective and influence people
  • Nuance - a very slight difference in appearance, meaning, sound, etc
  • Unbridled - not controlled or limited
  • Panic - a sudden strong feeling of fear that prevents reasonable thought and action
  • Bipartisan - supported by or consisting of two political parties
  • Comprehensive - complete and including everything that is necessary
  • Immigration - the act of someone coming to live in a different country
  • Reform - to make an improvement
  • Mooting - to suggest something for discussion
  • Fruition - an occasion when a plan or an idea begins to happen, exist, or be successful
  • Modest - not large in size or amount, or not expensive
  • Apparently - used to say you have read or been told something although you are not certain it is true
  • Immigrant - a person who has come to a different country in order to live there permanently
  • Metamorphose - to change into something very different
  • Silicon Valley - an area in northern California where there are many companies that make or use computer materials and electronic devices
  • Purport - to pretend to be or to do something, especially in a way that is not easy to believe
  • On someone’s coat-tails - using someone else’s success to get an advantage for yourself
  • Reputation - the opinion that people in general have about someone or something, or how much respect or admiration someone or something receives, based on past behaviour or character
  • Back-channel - a method of communication or discussion that is not direct or made public
  • Lobbying - the activity of trying to persuade someone in authority, usually an elected member of a government, to support laws or rules that give your organization or industry an advantage
  • Eschew - to avoid something intentionally, or to give something up
  • Knee-jerk reaction - a quick reaction that does not allow you time to consider something carefully
  • Rhetoric - speech or writing intended to be effective and influence people
  • Echoe -  to say the same words that someone else has said
